Hello, it started just over a year ago.

I bought my son a socket set for his 10th birthday, and something to use it on....  which was a 1300 twin port engine



We stripped it right down, and replaced all the bearings, cleaning it up as we went





Painted up the tinware, got it all together



And got it running



About 6 months into the engine build (it's taken just under a year to build the engine as the project progresses at the pace of a 10 year old, and we really only get weekends) I came to be the owner of a fugitive 4



Which we've stripped



Had the frame blasted and painted



Which is about where we are at the minute,  It came with discs at the front (I've also acquired another for spares) so to supplement this I've got some 944 rears to go on.  It's IRS anyway

We've cleaned up the gearbox as well actually




More to follow, but that's a years progress..... so not too soon

Dont know if "Tom" is you or yr lad, but the time and knowledge and experience you are giving your lad is brilliant and will be with him forever, learning your way around cars tools and engines at his age is of huge benefit. We will all be following this one avidley i'm sure.👍

I love my 3 girls but really makes me wish I had a son, or at least a girl who was interested in cars.  The look on his face is priceless

I had two daughters ,but one presented us with a gorgeous grandson  so he helps me on the buggy , very very lucky 👍

We got some 944 rear brakes to go on



Had a plan with some citric acid rust removal, and ended up with





Which we primed and then painted with brake enamel (should have got a spray can, but thought Tom might find this easier



Need to clean the back plates and the suspension arms then build them up.   Swapping over to 4x130 hubs as well, because we've got some wheels for the back

Went to Stonor Park, got a few bits including a pair of front calipers for £30....  we've got 2 pairs of front calipers but they both need new pistons and seals, these ones were a bit grotty but underneath the pistons and seals looked good, so I talked him down to the £30 and brought them home



We stripped them out, pistons popped with a footpump, and are all good



So we got lucky!!

Once they were stripped, we dropped them in the citric acid bucket and agitated them a bit, but they came up really tidy.  They are obviously pattern parts as the castings are a lot rougher than the other sets, but once painted they'll be fine.
The rears we painted up the other day looked terrible (the Halfords brake enamel wasn't very hard and it had run in places as it's so thin) so they have been stripped again and dunked again.



Then We gave them all a coat of primer and then a mate is going to paint them properly for us!

We removed the back drums... surprisingly for this vehicle, someone has actually spent out on something!



Then cleaned up and primed the IRS arms









Need to get some black paint now!

So then started cleaning up the 944 back plates

I'd take the driveshafts out and give it all a thorough clean, inspection and then service, just for peace of mind.

Yeah, we will.... just at the mo we don't seem to have spline tools (think the garage pixies have stolen them!)

 will be able to strip and clean the inner cv joints, note how they come apart because they only assemble one way correctly and work freely through out the angular range.

We've got a second set of arms which we will get shotblasted later and then we can build them up to swap over at a later date (a few years down the road)

The plan is to get it on the road in about a years time (hopefully) and do a bit of a shakedown in it, then pull it apart for powder coating and sorting the paint etc.

The grease in these ones is a bit like toffee, so will clean them out and have a good look at them when the pixies have finished with the tools

Nice. You have the one with the sensible head clearance! Going to have to modify mine or get a few vertebrae removed...

Do you have a close up of how the front mudguard stays are mounted to the backing plate please. Just about to fabricate something and looking for existing ideas.
