Nice. You have the one with the sensible head clearance! Going to have to modify mine or get a few vertebrae removed...

Do you have a close up of how the front mudguard stays are mounted to the backing plate please. Just about to fabricate something and looking for existing ideas.

They are badly mounted on the existing spindles, so will have to sort something else too.... 

The stays are welded on and you can't undo the nuts on the joints because of the stays 



If you've got anything better than that (can't imagine it's too hard!) I'm interested in yours!

Well that gives me an idea... of what not to do

I welded tubing to the frame out to the wheels and bolted through the wings to the tubing with plenty of off-road travel clearance .
If you want the wings close to the tyres the other option is long through bolts on the hub then brackets to support the tubing that supports the wings.

Don't crush the tubing to get a flat surface to secure to as this causes metal fatigue at the crush point.
This causes the wing to come of at 65mph on the motorway and strike the driver in the head causing the rail to head for the nearest embankment. (Don't ask. It still gives me nightmares now.)

That sounds scary!

I have the hi-lift mudguards at the moment



and I hate them so will be doing the extended nuts through the backing plate into a bracket thing.

In fact if Tom likes the high mudguard look I have the support frames ready made with u-bolts off mine - you are welcome to them.

Aaah!!! We are going for close fitting guards too      Always seems a shame to turn down pre-made stuff

I started this a few days ago and what a can of worms! Came up with a great solution .... then turned the wheel full lock.  Back to the drawing board!

So this is Mk 2 - (well 2.5 as you can see from the chopped tack weld!)  Much easier if you can just drill the guard holes to fit the steel, but as they are already there a bit more accuracy required.

I will finish this later but at the moment it works. Had to chop a little off the rear inner guard edge as it fouls the body on full lock/full extension.

So:
Replace 2 x aft backplate bolts with 60mm M10's (think they are 60mm will check when I replace them
Add 2 x M10 Nuts as spacers
Drilled 6mm x 25mm flat plate
Box is 20mm x 3mm
Guard plates are 3mm x 25mm vice bent to fit, sitting on 6mm neoprene
When its finished the guard plate will be bent over the box and welded to both cap and add strength

Not for us..... we are tidying up bits and scratching our heads still

We did a bit of machining,



Made some spacers and machines the type 3 hubs



Made a jig to redrill the discs



And now have a 944 disc conversion on the rear



Just waiting to get the calipers back, and we can refit them, next is the beam   

(Haven't done the joints yet, doing a few big bits to keep Tom interested)

But we rebuilt the front beam, it's had a bit of welding done so it's. It perfect, but it's pretty tidy now and has all new joints etc



We also cleaned up the steering box and arms, and replaced the joints



We primed up the irs spring plates, but have found out we can swap to swingarm parts..... so are on the lookout for some bits

We laid out some bits on the lawn and made engine noises



Got some cheap LED highlights, so will see how they go



And some LED tail lights



Things are moving forward slowly.... got some time booked with fabricator at the end of September, so will tickle along until then

You'll get a better ride with the IRS bits, so I'd keep them.  I've modified my rear suspension to be able to use the longer torsion bars.

Recently got some seat pans welded into the floor (so we can use seat sliders, made them deeper than needed in case we change seats)


Bolted the running gear in, and now it is rolling,  we did have a problem as we appear to have pre 67 spindles so had the wrong track rod ends





But now it is steering and turning!
