I've rung a couple of places locally and was wondering what the going rate for powder coating should be. I've been quoted £60 +vat for each wheel (2 colours) and £150 +vat for all the tinware for the engine. Does that sound about right? I thought it was a bit steep.

I paid £50 each wheel a couple of years ago , so not bad cosidering how much a new wheel would cost, tinware not sure, is it original VW ?? if so, how much if you can get it, to replace???

Good point Hudge. Yes it is original VW - in fact 1973/4 I think, from the donor car. The guy said he'd give me some discount if I had a few bits to do.

Wheels aside, most parts I take are around £5 ~ £7 each depending more on how much sandblasting is needed than the coatings.

Some badly painted bits need an overnight acid dip, and they usually charge me an extra quid for that one.

Complex finishes can be a little more, as multiple processes involved - An ally rocker cover for the Jag cost me £20 in Chrome finish

Seems about the going rate down here -

we have a few companies down here that offer the service with the main difference being that we can take in one or two bits at a time, whereas the rest of you seem to have  a minimum order quantity or price

For wheels, the place I used for mine charges £1 +vat per inch of rim for basic colours. £1.50 +vat for lacquered per inch.  So a 15 inch rim in black would be £15 +vat.

Stating the obvious but don't forget to mask the bolt holes and contact faces or you could have wheels come loose

I'd hope they would know to do that. I admit I hadn't thought about it. Although mine are Wolfrace Turbos and have big fat washers that slot in.

Far from it -

most powdercoaters will plaster everything including galleries, bolt holes and threads unless you really spell it out to them not to.

I cannot really comment on the quality because I don't have anything to compare to.  But I just wanted cheap n cheerful to make the wheels look presentable.....they were rough.
