Just  had a look at my other chassis which is a 66 and has the same shifter and has always shifted perfectly.

It seems that when in neutral the rear linkage cage on that chassis is set orientated a little more clockwise when looking at it from the front of the car which first suggested to me that my shift rod has been welded wrong, however I cant be totally sure because the bushing mount bracket on the 66 chassis is totally destroyed!!!!

I know when  bought that car the bloke told me it needed a new bush ;D.  How that ever shifted as well as it did is beyond me....

Any way I think I will probably go for the adjustable shift rod finisher that some after market peeps sell.

Anyone ever used one? Do they have to be welded, I read somewhere that you could epoxy them into place..

Most people seem to epoxy or JB weld them in place. If you can't find one in this country (I've had trouble in the past) I've got one kicking around somewhere.

Cheers David, I think I found one. If not I will give you a shout..didn't really want to messing with the shifter and this looks a good solution to what must be a pretty common problem...

Afternoon all, should the shift rod have a bend in it?

Mine appears to be dead straight in its shortened form.. I've been having problems with the gear shift this last couple of weeks, the new bush has gone in well enough and tightened everything up but finding gears is now a pita.

I've for a scat dragfast fitted but it's became a drag in its own right ;D

Kind of answered this now.

Took the shift rod off my other chassis and had a look, it has a slight bend but not how I expected it to be though.

I thought the bend was supposed to be lateral but it appears very slight and in the vertical plane.

On another note, I had to drill out the hanger at the shift location, it had totally sheared ( hoŵ does that happen) and the bush was stuck behind the hanger, no way that rod was coming out, I guess there must be a trick for fitting the new hangar as it won't fit through the shifter hole, probably feeding it in from the front is she way to go..

If you drill the replacement shift hanger in the same place you can puddle weld it in to the right place. You can use a rawl plug and screw in the holes to line it up and hold it in place while you weld one hole.
I'm in my buggy,
It's raining,
I really don't care.

Just been for an extended run with this new shift rod adjuster fitted, it's made a huge difference and the scat sh..fer (oops meant shifter ;-)up) has now come well and truly into its own.. Slick and smooth through the gears and impossible to get reverse when shifting down from 3rd.. Have to say the scat looks to have a design flaw in that the reverse lock out tab is manufactured in the wrong position and this mod has been necessary to sort it.

Next job will be bracing the steering column.

Did you get the adjuster in this country? Who stocks them (for future referance)?

Kingfisher Kustoms had these, a steal at £6 I thought...

I epoxy'd it in with JB weld. It's good and solid and just the trick I needed.....
