So... Problems started a few weeks ago, took the buggy out for a run and after a couple of miles the engine died...
Left it a couple of minutes and it would start and run for a few yards and the same thing happened again, and again.

Tried it a couple of days later, no problem at all. Few days after that, it wouldn't start at all...

Checked the plugs and we have a good spark. Stripped the carb down and cleaned the jets, now it'll now start but if you floor the accelerator it just dies, accelerate slowly and it picks up.

Any suggestions, haven't taken if for a run yet. Think there might me issues with the carb but don't know what.  :-\

AIR........ And way too much of it!

The fuel system has a blockage in it somewhere, still, or the Solex air control valve and fuel mixture
settings have gone way out.
Solex carbs are very fussy at the best of times, so ensure the idle settings have not been fiddled with... There is a big control valve
on the side that is part of this... Sorry I havent got the setup info at the mo...

Did you clean the carb out with compressed air ? That would be the best way to do it. If you need an air supply,
use an old pumped up spare tyre and modify an old foot pump connector with a tube to give you the outlet... A
clamp on the end can be the controller....

Flooring the throttle will open the butterfly, and air will be sucked in, if the main fuel system/jets have a blockage
the engine will die straight away. Gently opening it slowly will allow the air to be controlled and mix with the available fuel,
but it will still struggle.

Also, check the advance in your distributor , if you have a vacuum advance that is, is working, the back plate with
the points on it should move when you suck on the tube.

I would check this first then look at the carb....

Hi Hazel that will be the accelerator jet blocked.  With the engine off or the carb removed look down the carb and operate the accelerator you should see a steady squirt of petrol from the brass jet sticking out into the air flow straight down the venturi.

no fuel = blocked jet or the pump not working.  the jets can an do fall out.

I had very similar symptoms on mine, and was as Snoopy suggests, the accelerator pump.  Not sure why that would show itself one day then not the next though, unless more to do with the jet rather than the pump.
They're a real pain to drive like that though.

Thanks for the advise.

Dad used an air line to blow out all the jets.
Tried the accelerator pump and getting a good squirt of petrol.

Seems to be running now even but still can't accelerate too hard. Bit wet and dark to try it now, maybe tomorrow...

I don't think what I'm about to mention would just affect running under acceleration, so don't want to set you off on the wrong track unnecessarily,  but have you checked the rubber unions in the inlet manifold, assuming you've got twin port heads.

Good call, however..

When the rubber gaiters split the mixture will weaken a bit, but the engine will still run and shouldn't bog
down. A hissing sound will be apparent though, as air is sucked in through the splits...

The engine should/will run normally but there would be a danger of over heating.

Am not 100% sure but this sounds definitely like fuel starvation on the supply side, up to or in the carb, and, for me anyway,
the Standard Solex carb really needed a design hike to get it working properly.

Checks to ensure the float isnt sicking in the float bowl, as this could affect fuel level.... And fuel level in the carb is vital!

A new build often throws up fueling issues as crud it dislodged in the fuel line if its the original...

Perhaps worth a look at the tank end/fuel filter??

Check for air leaks between the carb(s) and the cylinder heads. Might be a worn or misfired gasket.

You can spray carb or brake cleaner round the joints on idle and listen for a rev drop or splutter.
