Has anyone on here ever messed about with moulding the gel backed car carpets at all ?

Can`t find much online, and I`m looking for some pointers.

Some say hot air gun, some say wallpaper steamer

Any advice much appreciated

Tried talking to rugsforbugs? Theirs are advertised as gel backed...

I'd be interested in this as just got my carpet from rugsforbugs yesterday for my trans tunnel, put it quickly in the buggy last night but could do with moulding round the back where it flares out and widens

Exactly the bit I was looking at yesterday.

I have loads of Gel Carpet here and had a quick play with a hot air gun, but in order to get it hot enough to melt the backing, the front became damaged with the heat. Going to try later with a wallpaper stripper, to see how that affects the stuff.

Bugger all on the net though.

what about a hot iron through some material to the backing?

I think "non contact" heat is key here, else it will just get messy - but the theory is that you apply some form of heat to the front, its melts the backing and you can press it into place, so that it retains the new shape once cooled.

I wonder if you can lift it gently heat it from the back with a hot air gun then put down and push into place

I tried doing that, but bloody awkward if playing with a large sheet.

Mines only small in comparison so may get away with it

gravity and hot summer weather will pull it down in time, patience young buggers.

I was thinking that to Snoopy and will leave them to do so, may be a long wait for some hot summer weather though

actually guys the rear tunnel section where it widens is easy to do. As you need to access the gear linkage at some point I have a flap section there , simply split the carpet at that area and it will then fit each side nicely and leave a natural gap on the tunnel which you then cut a peice to fit in and its your access flap for the linkage. 

Grissley, the problem I have is that I am trying to mould the entire carpet out of one piece, much like a modern car. I`ve done smaller panels in the past with similar carpets, but never with anti-rot gel backed stuff.

theoretically possible - just haven`t worked out how yet
