Nope, you are quite wrong there - I quite like the LDV, and its shame you don`t see many of them

Good one to rebuild and cannot wait to see it ;-)up

Probably one of my favorite British buggies, look to Brian Burrow's old one for inspiration!

If it's  Mk1 with a curved screen look after the glass, they're getting scarce.

I have not sanded some paint off to see ;) but It is an old mk1 and was a red/pink bleugh fiberglass and all the old fittings like fuel cap etc line up The same as one in a 70's mag,, May just be me ::)  As all did get is the shell and no running gear as I was not paying over the odds?? for a v5 that I do not need and as it is a hard top LWB it will go on a saloon v5 ;) , It is going on a 67 chassis, The one on page 13 of Building a dune buggy, As its been in Paul barn for over 10 years and needs some welding etc I will IRS and do lots of mods to it, like air ride it etc but not in a bad way,, It has got to be a driving buggy So will have an Eberspächer :D and tow bar or roof tent, maybe a turbo 1776cc I just got to see as I can not put lots of money in to it but I do have a lot of parts from old fast! etc vw's and some gear! and maybe a little idea! ,  But the bad thing is  ::) I got to build it in my backyard and I only got a 5ft gap to get it back out of ;D

To save on cost etc I got to build it at home and if "love thy neighbor" will not let me out over thy garden ;-)(-; It will have to go sideways In 2/6! bits So my build started by building a frame so I can roll the buggy less engine on its side out to the front lucky as the buggy chassis to the rooftop is a GT46" so I will get it out on its side If need be, But I may be ok as I got good neighbor's but give it time and me building the buggy >:(   and to top it off I still got to get it out of the front garden So all bits in and out have to fit past a 33" wide gate or over the hedge ;D But I can hiab it over if need be so my 1st build is a framework  Good thing is it give me a build roller :) ,,, sorry for the bad pics as I used a £13 sports camera,,,

The garden will be fine for the build and better than a garage miles away, there was one built in Gloucester also  in a garden that got craned out over the house when it was finished then it lived on the street.

It will be going in a garage ;-)up I'm only doing the welding etc outside and may get time to build a carport,,I hope to do all the welding and cage before it starts to get cold! and wet,

Needs a bit more welding work but it is a start ;-)up My welding must be ok as the twisting bar on the back has only one spot weld holding it on

The best thing for an old trike IRS backend :), I was going to cut all the mounts off but less work?? to weld the lot in :D I may narrow the tubes as well as I'm not using torsion bars and it will let me get the 10" slot mags in the body line

The boss :) gave me a hand to get the 64 chassis off and the 67 on the roller, The chassis is not as good as I was hoping it has had a lot of work in the past, And now needs a frame head :'( all ways the way the back end is good and I'm swapping it for an Irs one

but as it is a bit of a street/rat rod it will do!,,1st job hover out the rat's nest in the tunnel and pans...next pie cut,

I was going to fit a t2 handbrake and have a full bench seat" and make it a rock and roll, And uses the rear seat bottom,, so it would fit in the front to make a bed??  Looks like it Will be made out of steel ,,As the only cheap sheets of aluminum are in Coventry! And I'm looking to keep away from the 90's? billet aluminum look and little to no! chrome,

As the rear tyre is on the spring plate in the pics, And the only way is to bin the wheels or cut the body or lift it up bleugh So it is narrow time :D and as I was all ways going to IRS my next buggy, I pick up an irs back end from a trike,, It is lucky? in a way as the welding was bad! and I'm cutting that bit off,,

Both of these look like industrial scale land grabs !

You tootle up with your little buggy and trailer then the next moment you've annexed half a tennis court.

I'm surprised caravan parks allow the huge footprint...
Title: Re: GP LDV - The rise of Phoenix
Post by: Doon L001 on July 24, 2018, 06:16:59 PM
I used to have a Trigano, superb bit of kit, but every time I would put the thing up in an empty field as far from anyone else and the water etc as I could get some tw.t in a caravan would come and park next to it.
Problem with caravans is in a tent I used to want to turn in soon after dark as I knew I would be awake at first light, but caravaners watch telly until midnight and then they sleep on in the morning as they have blinds and soundproofing.

Camped near Yarmouth once, the farmer had three fields, all empty and said go where you like.  I drove through gates with the usual farmland swamp in them, shutting them behind me, to the furthest field and set up as far away as I could get.  Went out for a walk and came back to find 3 bloody caravans about as close as they could get, I reckon caravans think trailer tents are an easy lay or something and drag their tow cars over.
Then for 2 days I put up with them moaning about the mud on their Chelsea tractors and the walk (or drive) to get water and I took the tent down and moved to the other side of the field
Next morning, you guessed it.

Re camp sites, Camping and Caravanning Club was once great listing farmers who let you camp for a few quid and just supplied fresh water and a dunny, then they started insisting on shower blocks, hot and cold water, toilets that flushed etc and the good sites all vanished and what was left were the expensive ones with childrens playgrounds and loads of caravans, so I sold it and made room for a buggy in the garage - best move I ever made

My one is only for vw shows :D and will only us the trailer part, not the awning,,
(https://s19.postimg.cc/qorfn1qmb/images_2.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

We did look at a bell tent,, But putting a 12man up at bugjam 19! put me off tents and bugjam for life as we got up to a group of 6! asleep in the awning  :-\ ::) and one still ask for Breakfast >:( I was going to build a pod but I have not got the time, So for know, the flat pack will have to do,,

Back to the build :D and I'm going to fit a new frame head :) and sell the chassis ::),, Why as I'm going to cut the frame head off and the back end off a good chassis,, I have a good irs back end and I got a spine and frame head from a buggy I had 15 years ago and I may as well do a flat floor and loss the pan rim at the same time and get a clean body to pan look :D why doing all this I hope to drop the body 1" over the spine and lift the rear maybe 1" I'm lucky as I got a flat boot floor only thing that may stop me is the engine fan top hitting the body, I would build a box-tube chassis but time a money ,, If I can do the chassis and airlift all the bits like roll cage, turbo engine, can be added on over time

I was going to buy 1303 chassis off a guy on facebook to save me some time!! , but the guy took a deposit from someone, On the day I was going to pick it up :-\ So I had a day free! to strip a type 4 engine I have 8! engines to pick from, I was going T1 new build 1776cc turbo ,but I like type 4 engines and was all ways going to fit one to make a long haul automatic buggy,, So I pick the engine that only has 500hrs on it,only thing is it may have been used as a boat anchor ::) I do have a back up 2.0L ;) Turbo's and oval port heads do not mix?,, So I had a look on eBay and It was my lucky day :) The add was  "Mercedes Benz super charger used but working perfectly" ;D

I got ok to work on the buggy at last  :D Front end 5" ::) narrowed beam but will have drop spindles, discs, wheel adapters, so it will be only 3"! overall I was going to buy 5x120 pcd discs but it is less cost for new discs and I can go back to 4x130pcd etc if need be at any time,
I do some things the hard way as like the beam Yes it would only take money to buy a bolt on made one" but "cookie-cutter buggies have no soul",,
I did cut 5" out the middle weld and then I cut the uprights off that is a pig of a job! makes for a stronger beam! and I do not like beam inserts bleugh you will see no beam adjusters I will come to that next post

Why no beam adjusters! Over the years I have had lots of vw's and the best ride has been coilovers but good ones like avo's are over £400!! a set and my buggy Is not for racing and I have only seen one buggy on air shocks and I think airbags are best! ;-)up,, I do not know how this is going to ride or if it will work as the wheels may hit the body and tie rods may hit the tank an so on,,but it is all made from scrap so low cost!

Intrigued - and watching this with much interest   ???

What were the heads from?
Title: Re: GP LDV - The rise of Phoenix
Post by: IDA on May 09, 2019, 11:58:07 AM
Will be DOHC belt driven. The hard bit like 911 heads is the stud pcd and need to siamese them, I'm lucky as the pcd will work, but I will still need to mill aside of each head to siamese them, the cams - timing ??? And crankshaft rotation will be hard and pistons and belts etc etc etc ;D

I have a friend who quite some years ago now fitted a eberspacher petrol fired heater pulled from a left hand drive beetle in the local scrap yard. This had two controls. One for heat output and I think the other was a timer but not certain now. It certainly put out some warmth but smelled a bit bad. This may have been because it was old and probably never serviced at all.

I did have a petrol Eberspacher in my 181 they are good that had the red and green controls but they are big and old,,.. I like the Diesel ones as you can use red-Diesel" so cheap to run,,

Yes they are large. Almost all still existing will be in a "fairly dangerous" state condition wise. I have never seen the diesel version other than in pictures but they must surely be safer running off diesel. Do you still need to be a registered user to get duty free red diesel legitimately?

I always fit the iron under in the channel or if needs be remove the outer down lip, then you can fit riv nuts into the top of the box to secure the body, roll cage needs spacer tubes and long bolts then though. but it keeps the pan in original dimensions.

I put the box seam at the bottom as was going to us m10 rivnuts I used the GP dimensions as I will not be swapping chassis and unlikely it will fit any other buggy as it would need a flat rear boot! floor

Yes" but in the same way If I had used a stock rolling pan it would now be on the road" :D and it would still look the same as any other buggy""  I do have a slip from years ago for wheels outside of the body line :D,, and to get 10" and 7" slots in the body line is hard"" I can fit 5or6" slots on the front but I like to have tyres and front brakes that work not slide or lock up,,, As I'm going low the wheels have got to sit in the body line any way,,, I'm in no rush and I get more out of building them and I do driving or going to shows,,I had an mk1 as a daily drive for years, I had years of going to events and being lift to put up club gazebos etc why the show queens prop the bar up and talking boll...s,,

Why I was buying the shell I did get offered the chassis but it was ££K and way too good for me to cut up,, well it was sold and that was that to it came back up for sale - less engine and wheels... I do have 4 kids no time and :-X , So I was thinking If I got it and bolted it all up added new wheels and a 1600cc engine I would have a buggy for summer  :D but thank's to ccp ::) ,, and a twin carb 1600cc will look the same as any over buggy with a bug engine And Back in the good old days of £50!! engines I would turbo them,,So I got a thinking ::) I have got 3! 1500cc engines in my old shed and loots and loots of turbo and vw bits :D So its Turbo time yes turbo 1500 single port time,, My budget is £200 ;D for parts my engine cost £0 came out of a skip like 15 years ago,, So why build a 1500cc If you have bigger engines well stock gearbox and :-X So bits I will use one 1500cc engine I hope I have got a good one!! I will rebuild it as a stock engine apart from bolt up rocker shafts and uprated valve springs, I will deep sump it and full flow it,,The carb will be a Weber 32/36 yep the sh!t one that no? one turbos,, It cost £50 off ebay ,, Turbo will? be a T2! with a 1500 s/p the top end is  :-\ so I need to see boost at 2krpm and be full psi at 4k the cheap empi heads are good! but way too big!! So why have 4k as max rpm? > stock crank for one-case life etc, I will use a stock p-plate but a good disc, Why a stock p-plate! As it is a cheap weak link!! A lot faster to fix and say a gearbox, 10psi will get me 80hp?! and a long-lasting!! engine that I can fix on the cheap,

I all way just left 1500cc engines as SP and single relief valve but the one I got is twin valve ;-)up but has some mag rot I can tig it up but I will strip it and see Its only a fun engine so if its a bit leaky I can live with it as its no a show car..

After another cool day for welding clear the drain holes in the bottom of the shock towers  then with it upside down spray hot waxoyl in and rotate the beam to ensure it goes everywhere, it will slow the condensation rotting it out again.

Keeping yourself busy, looking at that I would have thought a big old external handbrake along side the tub would be period.
Is this going to end up a rat rod or steam punk motor.

I call it lots of things  >:(.. I picked an exhaust up from a guy and I told him the type of buggy he had in the hes garage I had not seen he's buggy before and I was spot on :-[ .. Years ago I was at volksworld 99? And in the packing lot there was a black rat and it was low step in out job not a show winner but looked Cool to me! I was talking to a guy who is a clean cut bug guy but he remember that buggy as well as it stood out in a good way.. So all I'm doing is pulling all the bits I have seen that I like and some I have not! seen and making a buggy I can park up anywhere that keeps me dry! But looks Cool and will drive ok..and I can stand! next to it and if anyone goes who built it I can go Me! ...I was going to put the hard brake a long the tunnel with a hand trigger but it would end up looking over the top..

I cut and used a part from the new rear to get me a line .. If I was just doing a cut and weld it would be easy! But I'm going to lift the rear 1" a lot of work for 1" but why not.

I`m really enjoying all this thread for the simple reason that unlike most of the build threads on here that always end up looking like a Buggy, I have absolutely no idea how this one is going to turn out

Keep up the good work mate - refreshing to see something very different  ;-)up

I did the Jas irs conversion but leaving the swing axle torsion bar tube in and cutting the horns off around it offsetting the top and bottom cut, they aligned well when the irs ones were fitted and welding in was simple.
I made a jig from the torsion end plate bolts to the 2 large frame horn bolts to ensure alignment.

It would have been simple for me if it was all stock!! ..I did make a jig to get the gearbox mount in line to find out it sits to one side by 2mm on the stock chassis.. The rear lhd side pan is out and so is an Irs bracket.. So made for a fun job

I know why if anyone lift the rear they put the hand brake lines on top of the rear forks as they are a pig to get over the tube. I Still need to clean up the welds and one day go to college to learn to weld better...

I Will make the front mount stronger as I had them brake before.. just line it all up before clean up and weld in..

can you v cut the sides of the bottom plate so it will bend up level with the rear plate then weld the join and the closed v cut, you could put a bridge plate on top of the rear before bending the tunnel bottom up for more strength.

That is the way I was thinking to give it a clean look and to save any  >:( at mot time But not a lot of room to get a cutter to cut it will see today If I can ..still got 2 fuel lines to fit as well

Well I was looking at some old pic of the buggy with 10" rims and 295/50/15 boots and the tyres sit way out and to get the wheels deep up in the body as I would like. the wheels need? to go back 2"!!... So as I can add track but not take it away faster... I"m going to take 2" each side more out For a fall 10" narrowed rear  :D I will put the body back on and move the wheels as needed so I can cut the arms as needed

The pics of that chassis you're welding (with blue rear forks) appears to have narrowed rear torsion tubes already. (you can see the weld/rusty join)

I'm out for a clean? safe! look no wheels out the body line etc. at that I may fiberglass the back lip! Back to stock as it looks  :-[ To recut and weld the tubes is not hard Getting it to ride right is the hard bit!! But air bags will help. . This is a pic of a 9" cut but with T-bars no lift.

Still got to re cut the bottom tube and put in a sway away adjuster that will hold the leaves and not let them float like some people do.. new bag and you can see the old arm with a solid bar it would work but with leaves it pulls on them a lot ...

As I'm not that well it's a slow build . And as I lifted the rear frame forks,  I will now just about have room for a type 1 engine ...but I all was had a thing for bleugh ct 1600cc out of the T25 Yes they are under powered and built for old tin cans  but they are cheap and in lots of ways are a type one under the tin but low profile and the Man in the white coat told me I'm not to drive fast cars..so i got one ::) It was that bad no one showed up to pick it up 2 times.. a 4hour road trip then a day in bed, but its home..I do not know why as I probably got 4' built type ones :-\

A lot of people will probably never have seen a CT engine it was used in the T25 T3 and was crap..It was no more then a 1600cc bug! engine that was made from cast parts :-[ They have a 215mm clutch, small value heads, hydraulic lifters and 3 m8 bolts that hold the fan on that can sheer off.. But they are a late case so 80s and have a built in oil filter ;-)up And type 4 solid lifters do fit them ..I have put one in a bug before but the case needs cutting to fit type 1 tin and the oil cooler mount is more forwards then a type one..
