Yes, I should have considered incerting some lamp nipples (for want of a better description) and I probably would next time. But the job was daunting enough as a first step into the black art of buggy body repairs. I imagine I'll mount them through the original glass on the inside edges of the wings. Also means the bolt should be well clear on the tyres when I make a hard landing ;D ;D

Volksrods are out there. They were, and still are quite popular in Yorkshire.

Nearly, but on the top/flat section, to keep them vertical. The nipples would have been set into the wing, but nearer the bonnet, like on a GP etc.

It's 40x40x3, or that's what it was advertised at, and 40x40 plastic end caps fit nicely ;-)up

All the dirty stuff is on cardboard etc,...cant wait to get it all back in now though, its doing my head in ;D
At least you can walk around the buggy though, which is a breath of fresh air.
The only real things which are left in the garage are our old dyson, which I use to hoover the garage floor :D, and my workmate, a few tools but thats it.

The airbags have already saved me once. Well having taken the airbags out they leave a nice recess to grab hold of when you get stuck with your head in the footwell and feet on the headrest..... like you do! ::)
You'll notice I've got the 'GB' plates with a view to a trip to the sub-continent, or Scotland as some call it. Must sort out the passport ;)
Aiden, I've been working on it more or less non-stop this week, so things have progressed a lot. I took some time off because of the school holidays but I've not actually seen the kids since last Sunday. I think they're still around somewhere!!

Took sympathy on the engine and gave a few bits a rub down with 80 grit and slapped on some Hammerite (and I mean slapped).
It's as rough as houses, but still 1000 times better looking than before I started. If I could only get the blighter in!! (see 'engine help' section for details!!)

I wondered how long it would take for someone to suggest that. But it's deffo NOT old gold. Any further suggestion that it is may end up with a strongly worded letter being issued by my solicitor! :D
So, got the engine running today.
A couple of issues though. The engine lid won't fit because the air filter is to tall. I see a visit from Mr Tin-snips on the cards to modify the filter.
More seriously there was a good old pool of petrol on the drive after I'd put some in the tank. I think it must be either a loose fitting hose, which I doubt, of the spiral wire in the fuel hose from the fillet to the tank is not allowing a good seal. Either way it's going to mean taking the bonnet off, and I thought I'd put that one to bed ::)
Got some more bits through the post today, insured it, and booked an MOT. Unfortunately the MOT is not til the middle of next week, which won't give me much time to sort anything out if needed before Stoneleigh, and certainly doesn't give me much shake down time ??? ???

So back on topic - I like those tyres!
I'm not sure if it's the camera but I've noticed a few buggies where the rear tyres look quite bulbous as yours do whereas mine look a lot more angular and square - and no, I don't mean we haven't evolved enough around here to have progressed to round wheels yet!
I guess I'm saying yours look to be shaped more like an inner-tube and I like that 'plump' look.
It's probably down to tyre profile, tyre size/rim width, and pressure maybe. :-\
I've had the dizzy out and given it a bit of a clean and added a Pertronix ignition and flamethrower coil. I just bobbed the dizzy it back in, so was very happy with how the engine ran considering the timing has not been set with any precision.

I've used Pertronix in mine for over 15 years. Fit and forget. Just a tweak to timing as things wear out 😳😜

Been more of a saga than a story. When my daughter started primary school I was working on it. She did her GCSE's this year, I kid you not!

That's the plan. We'll see how it behaves, considering the engine hasn't really done anything since 2002, and the whole car was put together by me!! Many parts may fall off in the next few weeks ???

Been for a longer run out today. Went to Ilkley and up past the Cow & Calf, got a good bit of noise out of the old motor up there, then went through the tunnel under the runway at Leeds & Bradford airport. I'd forgotten how much fun tunnels are. I must remenber to get onto the Leeds inner ring road soon as that's the best hunting ground for tunnels around these parts. :D

Been having a bit of bother selecting 1, 2, and R. I initially put it down to the EMPI T shifter having a built in short shift, but I'm it got progressively worse yesterday, to the point where I was trying not to have to stop. (changing whilst moving was still OK) I've re-greased the shifter ball and socket and adjusted the clutch cable a bit, but had no success. If anything it's now worse, possibly due to not getting the lever back in correctly. I'm not happy about the cable shortening 'thing' I've used. I think it may be allowing the cable to slip. So I think I'll get a new one and go back the loop and clamp method I used on my old GP
More importantly I have knocked up a whip/camera mounting plate, so I can now fly the white rose of Yorkshire, and bore everyone with dashcam style footage :D

My gear stick in my GP was a bitch to sort out but i put another stick in ( EMPI ) and had no problem, you did the old trick of selecting 2 and then tighten im guessing :-\.. may just need another fiddle ? long as the gears still select the box should be ok i think ? my problem with the purple one was the hockey stick on the top of the gear box where someone had painted everything and all that moved so it would not move the hockey stick once the paint / crap had made its way into the box... ::)

Went for a ride out today down the M1 to The NSRA swapmeet at Magna in Rotherham. Had a few sort of dead fires / miss fires. Not back fires. Lack of fuel perhaps? But did not really seem logical. It was not under full load, I had re-fuelled this morning. I actually came off the motorway at one junction to see if there was anything obviously wrong at the engine end. Of course as I came to a stop it was reving readily again. Had a few more miss fires later, but keeping it at about 3500 rpm seemed to help (issue was at about 3000-3200 rpm.)
Sounds a bit like an ignition problem to me, dirty points maybe. Or it could be a bad connection made worse by vibration at those rev's. I would check the condition of the points if you have them. If not, check for loose wires or bad connections around the coil and dizzy. You could start the engine in the dark and check for HT leads shorting out and sparking to the engine. It could of cause be one dodgy spark plug.

I'm pointless! so I can rule that out. Possibly a dodgy connection, but.was intermittent. I'll check them over.
I used to get icing with my old solex and that was much worse than what I experienced yesterday. Now I have a Weber 32/36....do tbey suffer from icing to some extert too? No real reason why they shouldn't I guess.
Yes, my Weber used to ice up quite quickly -
mine wasn`t a blockage in the heater pipes though, mine was because the heat risers on the exhaust had not actually been drilled out
Been to pick up my roof and side screens this morning. Now I have windows I can see through. That's one of the winter jobs ticked off the list.

Well I had the buggy at its first proper show last week, Stoneleigh Kit Car Show. It ran and drove better than I could have wished for but, and there is always a but, the engine did lose a bit of oil.........erm a lot of oil.
I made my first stop at Woodall services on the M1. I only really stopped because there is a toilet there, didn't really need it but hey I was a dog in a previous life and find it hard to pass a tree without using it! All had been well, driving really well, the engine was running nice and smooth.The only downside was the new exhaust which is too quiet, but hey,that's nothing to moan about in the grand scheme of things.
I strolled to the rear of the buggy, like you do, and HOLY SCHMIT, or words to that effect. Oil. Lots of oil. Now I'm no rocket scientist, but even I know the oil should be inside the engine, not all over the outside, dripping off the reg plate in substantial pools on the car park floor.
It seemed to becoming from the crank pulley but it was difficult ton say for certain. A quick message on the Beachbuggy.info Facebook page about the possibility of the crank seal having given up the ghost was soon replied to by Snoopy, pointing out there isn't a crank seal at that end of the crank ::) , and perhaps there was too much oil in the engine. This was possible as I had topped up the oil the day before. So on we went.
On the next leg I started to notice a bit of reverb from the exhaust as we went under bridges. Mmm, must have blown a bit of exhaust paste from one of the joints. Not a problem, it actually sounds better. As the miles passed the reverb was now no longer as we passed under bridges,but all the time, and boy did it sound great!
Next stop Leicester Forest services M1. More oil, not as much, but more than I wanted to see. But more concerning at that moment in time was the exhaust. The reason for the great sound was all too clear, as was the potential for disaster had the services been another 10 miles down the road. My exhaust has a headed which gathers all four pipes at one common flange, to that flange is attached the muffler with three bolts. The nuts for two of the three bolts had gone, and the third was loose. I was sooo close to leaving the muffler on the M1, or more than likely in the front of my wife's car, as she was following me to Stoneleigh. OK, grab some lunch, let the exhaust cool down and try think where I have some M8 nuts on the buggy which I can take off to get the exhaust fastened up again.
Halfway through sandwich number 1 and all hell broke loose.......in the form of four beach buggies arriving at the services. Myles, Doug, and whoisit in their Volksrods, and thingy in his Manta Ray. Really sorry guys for forgetting your names, especially 'thingy' as I swear his toolbox was out of his buggy and at the side of my exhaust before he'd applied the handbrake. Anyway I owe 'thingy' for the repair,and the others just for the for the sense of not being alone their arrival provided.
So on to Stoneleigh. A great weekend was had, tales of other peoples woes,especially GrooveChampion's made mine fade into insignificance by comparison.
The return run was less eventful. Still a bit of oil loss but hey, there couldn't be much left to escape anyway. A three buggy convoy with Myles and Doug was a bit of a highlight for me. It's been so may years since I've experienced that at the wheel of my own buggy.
So back home and to try fathom out what went wrong. There was more to it than just over filling the engine as the oil level was now back down to the bottom marker on the dipstick. What had changed since the buggy last run just a few weeks ago?
Well there hadn't been much changed which could cause this oil loss. A new crank pulley, new alternator stand and filler. And after owning the engine for 27 years I had just got round to connecting the oil breather on the oil filler to the air filter.
To my mind suspect number 1 was the aftermarket crank pulley. Was the oil thrower thread not up to the job. I removed it and was instantly disappointed. The rear of the pulley was clean. I was expecting it to be bathed in oil. The oil throw thread was also mostly clean and didn't look as though it had any work to do, let alone be overwhelmed by the task.
I cleaned up the tinware and found that there was a lot of oil on the tinware, under the oil pressure switch. Could it be leaking from the switch? Maybe. Having replaced the oil pressure switch, only to find the replacement is faulty and re-instated the original one, I went for a drive this evening. I stopped after about 6 miles and hoped to find a small pool of oil below the switch. There wasn't. But now there was one near the dipstick. Although on the run to Stoneleigh there was so much oil it was hard to distinguish where it was coming from it was also clear that some areas where only suffering from splatter. Most of the engine to the right of centre could be described as suffering from splatter. So crank case pressure would seem to be the culprit. Perhaps the oil had leaked from the oil pressure switch originally, but removing and replacing it had cured that leak point, and moved the problem to the dipstick. Next I removed the breather pipe from the oil filler, cleaned up the new pool of oil and set off again, back home. A slightly longer route home, with a nice long uphill drag to get the engine working. I arrived home, jumped out and checked out the engine. Nothing, not a drop. So hopefully that is sorted. A few more runs will confirm or deny the matter I suppose.
But what to do about the breather to the air filter? A larger diameter pipe to allow the crank case to breath more easily? Or leave it off, as I never had a problem running it like that before!
Hopefully I can now concentrate on my list of 101 things to do before IBW in a month's time.
My type 1 engine used to throw out out at an alarming rate, and that was also down to how I had the breather pipe.
It took me a while to get it right, but once I had an amount of negative pressure in that pipe from the air filter, the leaks went away

You might be surprised, I empty out my catchpot after nearly every trip and always get water and mayo

Well after the main interior side panels being fitted last year it was obvious that a couple of additional smaller ones were requires to make it look right.

I'm not very good at keeping this thread up to date.
Since the last update I've replaced the engine with a rebuilt 1776 item from Farmer Rob. Painted up some new tinware, and added twin carbs.
Been for my first real drive with the new engine today, out to Skipton and back. Knocked 50+ miles of the running in process. Happy days.

Yes, borrowed a pair of cannons for now. Will get a merged exhaust made soonish.

Fuel pump relay fitted. Dash warning lights fitted. These were purchased at last years Stoneleigh. Oil filter pimped. Crankcase breather via rocker covers fitted, nearly.

Based on the last time I followed you lead a cruise towards a dark sky clearly about to dump on us - in the Netherlands - I have zero confidence you won't soon find a rain cloud to drive under !
At Stoneleigh a few years ago I had the rear gear linkage fall apart on me. It made for an interesting 5 mile journey back to the site in 1st gear!
Anyway, a bit of bodywork had to be sacrificed to gain access to the linkage. (Floorpan not exactly the correct cut for the tub, but that's another story)
The linkage was re-assembled with the aid of Chad, and is still going strong.
The bodywork damage, erm, well it's out of sight, so not a lot has happened to that.
Today however a fix! Straight out of the botchit and scarper playbook, but a fix of sorts. 3 pieces of orange gorilla tape.
I can't believe how much better it looks. Happy days.😂😁
