I have been in contact with Ricky Evans Motorsport http://www.heatedwindscreen.com

They do road legal heated windscreens and are able to make the Manx style screens (I was specifically asking about the (16" x 42").  So I am messaging to gauge interest.

Here is what they said (The prices are currently approximate)

  • If it was just one you could be looking around £450 + VAT
  • If we could get to maybe 5 screens I'd say more like £300 + VAT each.
  • The magic number would really be 10 screens as the price would come down again to maybe £200 + VAT

I know there is an IVA requirement about having a way to demist your screen so this could be the answer.  Also at this time of year we are all having issues if we are still driving.

Does this include the frame same style as the Manx. Would be interested in a 42 x14 if the are.

The prices are for heated glass only, you would need your own frame

I would be really interested in one of these. My 16" screen is still packaged . Does anyone know if it is a simple job to remove the existing glass from the frame?
You are correct. IVA requires "effective demisting". I have a jury rigged set up in my shed at the moment using two puny 12v heating units of the type you can get from the likes of carbuildersolutions.  These have real shortcomings in that they cannot be ducted and produce a puny amount of airflow. These have gone through IVA for others but a heated screen has to be worth every penny.  ;-)up ;-)up ;-)up ;-)up

Taking out is as simple as removing the two philips screws, pulling the bottom rail off then pulling the glass out.

What are the criteriors for screen de misting re BIVA? Would a heated screen do it quick enough? Would it not be best just to put the car through the test without the screen, wipers and washers then fit them afterwards?

Dave... Yes it would be easiest to fit screen after IVA. I know of an individual now that took a marlin for iva with windscreen.   The demist criteria is simply... must be efficient "in the examiners" judgement. More difficult is the windscreen wiper criteria in actual practice... Criteria sounds simple in that the requirement is must be "2 speed". Must "auto park". The 2 speed is what appears to cause mountains of trouble... slow speed must be, in the opinion of the examiner, of sufficient speed to clear continual rain. This judgement is open to the examiner. High speed must be  near as possible to being "50%" faster than slow. I know of an individual failing the wiper criteria on speed as the test was done on a "dry screen". The examiner would not allow water to be used from the washer system. It`s all down to the examiner you get, on the day you go sort of thing and there appears to be a great deal of variance from area to area.  I simply would like a heated screen to have as a possibility at some time in the future. Would it be effective? I do not know.... I now know of a guy who took a new build Marlin for IVA and it failed on two things. One it needed a fuel tank with foam inside and emergency cut off valve. Second... ;D failed on windscreen wipers and demist. He was, off the record, told to go home & bring it back with aero screens so there is a pointer to how to do it. (Fuel tank foam as the marlin had race prepared engine.)

Just to say the heated front screen worked brilliantly in the Ford Focus.
Very quick to work, it cleared frost and demisted.

Yes... My first experience was from a Ford Focus. This experience made me wonder why on earth all cars didn`t have a heated front screen as standard. If I was in a position to be able to afford a new car, which will never happen  :(, and the only option was to have to choose between a heated rear screen or a heated front screen but you couldn`t have both I would choose the heated front without a moments hesitation. Buggy.... open to the elements... just don`t know if this would be less effective. Spent many winters in the 80`s travelling to and back  from Manchester daily over the M62 over the highest point of the pennines at saddleworth moor with so much snow coming down that the wipers could barely cope. As the snow built up on the screen and the heater blowing full blast the misting on the inside of the glass was a nightmare. A heated front screen could well have made all the difference. (Car was a Vauxhall viva estate followed by a succession of sierra`s. Company cars that arrived new with delivery miles only and went back after 2 years with 130,000 miles on the clock. (Does anyone remember ford introducing the "variable venturi" carburettor ?? What a piece of failed technology that was. Had to stuff a cloth in the air intake, turn the engine over and it would then start first thing on a morning.  ;D)

AGREED!!! I had it in my 1994 Renault Laguna. It was amazing! Why oh why oh why dont all cars have them! I think its something to do with Ford and a patent (but it can't be that big a patent!) I know Minis can have them under license from ford. Im even considering buying a Ford Fiesta (to replace Andre's car) and a big factor is a winter with a heated windscreen.

Having driven the buggy in autumn/winter mornings with the mist/dew on the screen its got to be a good idea (OK I actually look over my screen). Fair enough though, it will be a big investment on other parts of a buggy build which may take priority, but certainly worth considering.

Going back to the IVA/SVA issues.... Agreed about doing the test without a screen, but what if you are building a buggy with a integral roll cage with the screen? (Gary/Big GPs for example) In which case you can't do the test without the screen and then this heated screen would meet the requirements.

For the wipers you could just fit a 6v motor and a potentiometer cranked up to a slightly higher voltage for the test then pop a 12v in?

This screen wouldn't fit a custom frame though and I'd hate to be the person trying to cut a screen costing that much $$$
