The front reg plate on my buggy it square, silver letters on black, but its the acrylic type or what ever modern plates are not pressed ones.
I would like to replace the front one for the same, as the one I have now is cracked from one screw hole to the edge of the plate.
I would also like one of the same for the back, as at the moment it has the oblong type ones.
I am dropping the plate onto the rear cage.
I know I can get the pressed ones, but Im not sure where Tim got the acrylic ones from, its the correct size, so its not a bike plate.

Bennets will do various sizes, they can be a bit funny if it's not the correct size, but as long as it's a show plate they will still press them for you.

Grissley is completely right by the way, in the same way if they don't have the BSi mark they are an Mot failure. (and is now enforced)

However, and I am asking this because I have read up on the details yet but assuming your car is pre-1973 (as many of us have) then we are OK with the black and silver ones. Do they now have to show the BSi mark - I wouldn't have thought so?? So as long as the plates look more or less legal and standard - so no US style plates (or even german) and they are the "standard fonts/spacing/size for pre73 plates in black and silver, are they fine?

In which case they show plates would be OK? Naturally if you are using the more modern black/white & black/yellow then absolutely they need to be BSi marked from registered suppliers.

Any thoughts?

When I got "Andre"s car, popped along to Halfords to put my plate on (OK, OK its because I wanted them on straight away ok!) and because I have just 5 characters in it, I want the the S3 to be spaced just a tiny bit further from the ADR - still sticking with everything standard I stress and I am talking millimetres here and they just weren't happy doing it at all. So yes, even with "shorter" plates there are still strict guides they use with the positioning.

So on the old Saab is how I wanted it, but on the Merc was as far as they wanted to go...

mine is a 72, so the black plates are ok. is it legal to have the square on the front and back, which are of leagl size, not show plates etc.
As I said in my first post, the one square plate I have is the legal size, but is plastic/acrlyic not pressed which I like.
But not sure about the BSI, Im not to bothered about the plates being authentic to the model year, as its a street buggy, so modern plates would be ok for me if you are allowed to have them on a 72 chassis, but then you couldnt have the square on the back ??

Also, Im not sure what the next person who buys it would want, ok, all they have to do is change the plates, but Im trying to get the buggy just right, as I dont want to sell it until its just right now, as thats just not me.

I have square on the back of mine

And oblong on the front

Never had a problem, they are pressed plates and correctly marked.
I'm in my buggy,
It's raining,
I really don't care.

The regulation says that the BSI marking / supplier details thing only applies to plates fitted post-2001 (and on an old car like most buggies, who can tell when the plates were fitted?).  The MOT test manual states that only vehicles with a 51 plate or later should be inspected for these details.  So I guess the vast majority of buggies will be OK with any plate that's the right font/spacing/colour.
If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is...

A spot on answer from Luddite and the beauty of running an older car legislation is not retrospective so new stuff does not matter, only the windscreen wash fitment went retrospective but even then under PSV mot testing local route busses do not need them fitted.
