I have had 2 of those cylindrical fuel pumps and they are rubbish imho. Both failed and caused no end of issues.

Out of interest, where were they located?......
Funnily enough, the only pump I've seen fail was a generic facet type.....

Always buy a genuine facet...........its more than a copy for a reason.

All my pumps were / are  fitted to the bulkhead just above the brake master cylinder.

Same here....just wondered, as some people insist on ignoring manufacturers spec, and fitting them near the carb.......I wondered whether this may lead to failures now and again.

Mines on the back body by the torsion bar but still well below the tank and gravity feeds it, I like to keep near the minimum of the system pressurised but my carb is a few inches higher than a beetle one.

Mines at the back about level with the bottom of the tank. I would imagine if it was above tank level there would be a possibility of getting air in there if it drained back and that could speed up pump failure.
It did take a bit of priming because of the pipe length to it but once there are no airlocks there shouldnt be a problem.

I have used Facet pump's on my old and new type 4 engines, I did not see any recommendations in the instructions as to where to fit them lol so I bolted them both on to the top of the engines. They are both low pressure one's and I have not used regulators with them. They have both primed fine when disturbed; even when I've had the engines out, only took 3 to 4 sec's to prime and fill carbs. How long they will last is anyone's guess!

The fitting instructions did say to try and fit the pump as close to the tank as possible, but said nothing about the height of the pump in relation to the tank. I assume thats because its a " pump " and thats its job to pump fuel if that makes sense. They are directional.
As for priming/initial startup,again there are NO instructions on this and it pretty much started straight away.

My original Facet was bolted to the side of my cooling fan, and could almost be heard over the exhausts

For the last year I have been using a HUCO low pressure suction pump. It ideal for the buggy as it is designed to be fitted in the engine bay. It works in the same way as the old SU pumps and stops pumping when there is no demand from the carb float valve. Good German quality product.

Ive the old £25 knocker pump yep its a noisy begger but once she is running ya cant hear it for the exhaust note.

However I have fitted a speedboat fuel pump cut out switch. For extra security.

Biggest gain in brownie points for the old SU is when they start failing and stop you get out give them a knock and you are off again knowing sometime in the near future you will have to do the points but until then get out and hit it modern solid state pumps fail and that is that.

I'm thinking of buying this Facet-Purolator fuel pump & filter for my buggy that's in Spain; petrol in carb always drying up in the hot weather so this will help starting. Anyone know if its likely to be the "noisy" type?

Its one of the so called "noisy" ones, not that you'd notice after a couple of seconds to prime the system.

What I have fitted now and works well thank you, feeding a couple of 40's strapped to the engine.

My Facet is only noisy when the tank is empty, works as a audible fuel gauge.....
