Just don't ask this question on vzi, you'll get flamed, someone asks this question every couple of weeks without searching for it and it usually gets messy as everyone has their own favorites.

The only bad oil is oil that is dirty or too low.

IMHO the best oil for an a/c VW is a regular 20/W50 or a 15/W40, no need for anything expensive, just change it every 3000 miles or once a year, supermarket own brands etc. are fine.

I'm currently running mine on Viscol 10/w40 semi synth (£9.99 for 5l from Home Bargains) because it's cheap but I tend to add 1/2 a bottle of STP to bulk up some of the 'old engine' additives and because I used to like the stickers when I was a kid.

As I say, everyone has their own favorites, there isn't a 'best' oil and you'll find anything that says 'motor oil' on the can will be much better than the straight 30 oil that VW recommended until mulitgrade oils became popular in the 70s when they changed their advice.

This is what they recommend now, basically anything...

.

I've always used 15/40 mineral oil don't use fully synthetic oil as this doesn't remove heat that well in air cooled engines... I found out the hard way a long time ago with a new engine in a beetle.
I'm in my buggy,
It's raining,
I really don't care.

I saw the thread you were involved in a week ago. Some not very nice people on there and expect everyone to have the knowledge of a expert. In my situation thats not the case  ;D ;D

Spoke to Tim Flynn yesterday and he said to use 15/40.  If anyone will know he will, 50 years in air-cooled engines and trained by VW.

Good old fashioned Duckhams 20/50 can usually be found for about £8 at your local cash and carry  ;-)up
