I'm currently running a 009 on my LWB GT.  It's never been good, with the most enormous flat spot just where you don't want it.  Running the mixture overrich has made the buggy driveable, but obvs it would be better with an SVDA distributor - trouble is, which type?

The motor's a 1300SP, running a 34 PICT3, bog standard '67 Beetle otherwise.  I know the part numbers of the SVDA which should be fitted and the suggested interchange part numbers* but do I need to stick to these? There seem to be very few correct parts out there, especially within my meagre budget! Is there a an aftermarket (electronic?) SVDA which can be just fitted?  Am I overthinking this, as is my tendency?

*SVDA: VW 113-905-205K/L, Bosch 0231 137 009/010 > 315-905-205B, 0231 137 031
Interchange: VW 113-905-205M, Bosch 0231 137 021, 113-905-205T, 0231 137 035 or 036

If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is...

Personally I wend for the 123ignition Tune+

It's a bluetooth distributor that you can program the curves for, also has the option to turn the distributor off with a PIN to immobilise the ignition.

You can set the curves up as pure mechanical or add vacuum and boost curves (ideal for turbo and superchargers).

When I setup mine I set it for a 7 degree static curve, then applied a mechanical curve, drove it for a while to log the vacuum signal and then decreased mechanical curve and added the vacuum curve based on the actual signal from the carbs.

If you go this route, pm me and I can send you my curves.

Get a standard beetle distributor with vacuum and fit an electronic module in petronix, accu spark or alike.

123 is a very good distributor if you don`t mind the cost. They work very well.

Agree with snoopy... distributor with vacuum advance... I have a pertronix ignitor 1 on my buggy. It has to be many years old and operates faultlessly.

A Solex 34Pict3 was developed in conjunction with the vacuum advance, Best mates so to speak  ;D

Try to ensure you are not pushed into running purposedly "over rich".  It`s not the answer  and you will soot up plugs at idle when the autochoke is not fully open.

Is your issue a true "flat spot" or can you detect "bogging down" under full acceleration ?

I too use to have a flat spot when running a 009 distributor. I now run Petronix 2 in my SVDA. Farmer Rob modified one of my Kadron ( Solex his 40/44s  ) to provide a vacuum take off. No flat spot  ;-)up

Why are you running a 34 pict3 carb on a 1300SP engine? A 30 or 31 pict carb will run a lot better!

I'm not!  I'm using a H30/31!  I have no idea why I put 34PICT3 down, can't even use the excuse that it was a Monday morning. Thanks for pointing that out, Rob.

Lol, what ya like! Actually A H30/31 will run with a 009 dizy but not to well. A vacuum only dizzy, which are getting hard to find a good one now or a SVDA dizzy, like Ebay item 150606388958  However do not connect the vacuum pipe up to the port on the side of the carb!!!. This is for the vacuum only dizzy. You need to connect it to the bottom right port on the rear of the carb.

Hope this helps, Rob

It does, Rob, thanks.

Port info duly noted - I did think the port on the side was the one to use.

As it's payday, I'll be investing in one of those quickly, before the money runs out :-)

There plenty of electronic ones on ebay for £60-£70 but you will not get any more power out of them. It's just a case of set the timing and forget it with the electronic ones. I still run on points lol

This was good enough for VW in 1936 and in excess of 21 million Beetles, laterr plus kubel plus scwhimm plus type 2 plus type 3...... Me thinks this should tell you something  ;-)up ;-)up

@Rob
Just to double-check...
The correct one to use is the angled port I have taped up in the picture, yes?
Thanks

Thanks, Rob. I've not got round to it yet so no worries only just noticing!

One thing I didn't realise is that the 009 is 90° out from the SVDA, which confused me for a bit.
