Bright speedo bulbs.......do they exist?

Is there any straight swap bulbs available to improve the speedo illumination?

What size bulb and wattage do you currently have?

Upping the wattage is the obvious one, but be careful not to go too hot as the heat can start to "burn" any plastic coloured filters that may be in there

some VW speedos have a clear or tinted plastic dome over the bulb in the speedo you can remove them to let more light out, also check there is 12v or above at the bulb holder with the engine running]

I replaced my lamps with LED strips. From memory 5/6 LEDs per strip, much brighter than a single lamp. Wired to replace the lamps, strips hidden within the gauge enclosure.

Led readily available..... These are much brighter than normal bulb. ... Direct replacement for original. Two choices as normal for led. Warm white or Cool white. Cool white is very bright.

Are they dimmable if using the standard switch?

That I have not tried........   Led fires up at around 2ma. I have dual brightness via added resistor on all switches but have speedo illumination at full brightness.

You can get small LED replacemebnt bulbs from car builder solutions, but theyre are still very dim. Ok for the indicator or high beam.

You'll need to keep a halogen one for the oil pressure tho or it wont work without doing more complex wiring.... stuff that... 

If you go the led route for speedo it can be done in moments.....

Get the bulbs from the Classic car supplier. These are made to their spec and as said are very bright. (Come in the two white variants plus red, green and blue,)  Remember that the OIL, Indicator and Alternator are REVERSE POSITIVE so make sure you select these.

IMPORTANT... Alternator needs too "see" approx` 4 volts to kick in and provide output. So a led just needs a resistance wired in series with an led to supply a load. Either wire the normal bulb in series with the led or solder in a resistor. I have this on my buggy so can say conclusively that it works....

I've seen something similar done where they used side light/sequential indicator led strips so you get a nice amber chase pattern when your indicators are on

It`s the alternator bulb that needs additional attention. Dead simple to do. The indicator, oil pressure, speedo illumination and high beam are direct replacement bulb sizes.
