Hi Matt and welcome.

I have some great memories of Cleethorpes from the mid 1990's.

We used to have some beach buggy beach racing events up there as part of the National Buggy Register (sadly no longer in existence). The DYNO - Drive Your Nuts Off - events

In total had 4 years of beach fun up there doing 1/8th mile drag racing and short circuit time trials on the beach. We used to camp in a fenced off field just behind the dunes, right up the far end by the theme park - if that makes sense?

My old buggy at Cleethorpes

And whay would become the Midland Buggy Club at the camp site in 1996 ish

Chad

Its also the only place I have ever been barred from a pub - but that is another story  ;D ;D

Hi Chad!

Those are great pictures! I remember watching those events as a kid, the seafront is only a 2 minute walk from my house.
They should bring those events back... It would be fantastic! I know for one the local VW here club would be massively interested in that! The monthly meet is at the boating lake.
Yes I know exactly where you camped... It is now fully fenced off and called the Meridian Showground or something!?It's used for outdoor events... it's crying out for a VW show to be honest.
I've also always wondered why Lincolnshire doesn't have a fully functioning Drag strip considering its the flattest county in the country and has abandoned airfields everywhere.
Somebody somewhere is missing a trick!

Haha I'd love to hear that pub story one day... Like you said though another time  ;D

Hello everyone  ;-)up

So last year one rainy Feb weekend I was cruising the web and wondered what ever happened to the NBR, plus other buggy sites and I found this site, that got me thinking about Cleethorpes and the fun that was had there on the DYNO weekends.
Does anyone remember the video that was made of one of the weekends ? it was called DYNO96, can you believe that was 20 years ago, so as a kind of homage to the buggy world, NBR and Cleethorpes I set about finding my copy, then digitising it.

Locating the tape went well, locating a machine that would play VHS tapes proved a little more tricky, then getting a 20year VHS tape to play at any decent quality for digitising proved even more fun. Anyhow after a year of faffing about in between doing other stuff I finally pulled it all together and got it up on youtube, yeah I know it said don't copy it but hey its 20yrs ago and I felt it was a shame not to let the rest of the world see what we got up to in those days.

So where are you all today, some of you are obviously still here and messing about with buggies just a bit older now LOL

Anyway without further a do may I present DYNO 96 .......enjoy

Don't we look so young  ;D

Fantastic Chris.

Not really anything wrong with the quality, so your efforts are more than worth it, even the yellow flickering to pink and back to yellow seemed a stylish bit of editing. All the buggys sounded great and I can't believe most aren't still running somewhere or other - and I bet a few of them still have traces of 1996 sand splattered into crevices !

I cannot take any credit for the weird colour effects, they were due to sand getting in the works of the camera, thats how the original was, it was basically a straight copy off the tape and the only edit I did was to remove a 2min section in the middle which had folks names against their buggies as some folks dont like being plastered all over the internet.
From memory the following year we asked if the film crew were coming back but I think the sand wrecked a lot of expensive kit and they said no way  :D

So I wonder how many are still messin about with buggies 20yrs on  ??? wouldnt it be fun to have a 20yr reunion there, dunno if you're even aloud on the beach any longer there  ??? anyone got a google link to map and street view of the area as I cannt for the life of me remember where it was actually held  ???

Well I give full credit to Adrian Flux for sponsoring the event and it makes me glad I'm presently giving them my buggy insurance business. The organisers were clearly giving various local Council officials a ride around so the key to getting another event on is to get an official ('responsible') sponsor and to approach the local Council name dropping how their enlightened predecessors had seen the worthiness of such an event. Places are always keen to have popular events that will bring in spectators/tourists to spend money.

Definately, councils are normally very glad to have these types of events to bring in trade, the key is to involve them at the very begining, quite often folks are put off by all the H&S and risk assessment type stuff but I've found as long as you ask the right questions fill in the correct forms then almost anything is possible. But you MUST get them on board at the onset.

I've put a link to the video now in my Sig file as I know that on forums the original link can get easily buried unless an admin want to make a sticky of the link in another area maybe.

I wanted to go to that but I could not get the time out from work back then. Plus my baby girl was only 18 months old then too.
I'm in my buggy,
It's raining,
I really don't care.

And a year on I find my own tape of one of the DYNO years, not sure which year this was, don't think it was the same year as the real film boys were there.

Anyhow have a giggle at some old/young faces and buggies from sometime in the mid 90's

Haha. Just watched the first minute or so, and there's me entering the camping area in the red GP, followed by my mate in his yellow Volksrod, which he still owns.
