Hi, in my surch for An AT gearbox i have found one but the housing is damaged. I think the cluch/ flywheel came lose and ran intro the housing.
I have an old swingaxle AB gearbox with good housing.
Are those the same housings and is it possible to change the complete inside of the AT gearbox(IRS) into to AB housing (swingaxle)?
Or is this to much work and is it better i keep on surching for a good AT  Gearbox? ::)
Anyone had done this before??

Thx
Erwin

Don't know of it being done, but the best ones to ask if it's possible is VWBears in Solihull birmingham

I'm in my buggy,
It's raining,
I really don't care.

Are both boxes double removable side plates?
If not then no but even if they are you do need special tools to rebuild a gearbox.

Quze,

Get in contact with Ruben on here,

as he has a Dutch mate that seems to break a lot of VW`s and may be a source of an AT box for you   ;)

As far as I know nobody does a conversion only like for like rebuilds or exchanges, how bad is your bell housing?

I have not seen a box with that much damage from a flywheel coming off, on my previous comment I see Limebug do conversions so guess they would do your one box out of 2 if the swing is the correct type.
You box will be classed as damaged and not rebuildable or fit as exchange.

Why an AT?

If you are running big wheels they are a little over geared IMHO, I find a 4.125 final ratio better in a buggy.  But don't believe everything you read on the web most of the code lists you find on line are not 100%.  I have just fitted an A0 code box (that's a zero not an O) that is not even listed on any I have seen. Swing axle, early style with 2 drain plugs and 4.125 where an AO is listed as a KG 3.875 on most so it can be very easy to get confused.

AO 1600 4.125 Karmann Ghia from 8/70

I'm changing the complete chassis to IRS and I need a gearbox. So , in my surch, I prefer an AT instead an AM.  :)
I don't have an IRS  gearbox at the moment .  :'( but i'll find the one i want.... ;-)up

This may help to decide what the ratios will do for you with other boxes

So I didn't take the risk....I have 'found' an AT box which should have had a revision,  stronger flenses and stronger gears ( 3th and 4th).
Somebody else told me, if you check the oil from the gearbox and there are metal pieces of 3mm ( or bigger) in the oil ...leave the box and look for another... very small parts of metal are not abnormal. I think parts bigger than 1mm will worry me..... I'll check mine tomorrow...
