Pier Pressure - Cruising Against Cancer

Friday August 12th (Day 1 of 10)


We will be starting our challenge in the main square in Oldbury town centre (West Midlands), Mine & Ruth's home town. Here we hope to be joined by several other members of the Midland Buggy Club for the first leg. We will be passing by Snowdon and popping onto the Isle of Anglesey over the Menai Bridge twice, before ending the day at the Travelodge in Halkyn near Chester.

If you are in this area today, then I could really do with some help and support. If you have any official contacts that may be of use, then please let me know. If you know anyone in the local groups of the Breast cancer Care or Cancer Research Charities that we are supporting, Newspapers, Local media, local radio, Mayors, anyone official that is up for a photo shoot, or even rent-a-crowd to cheer us on, then can you get them to the piers for our photo shoots? If you have a Buggy and want to join us for todays cruise, then we would love to have you on board, the more the merrier.

Obviously, you can see that with what we are trying to accomplish, it does mean that we are very limited on time, so any drinks or refreshments that you can pass in the direction of the team would be very much appreciated, and silly things like pointing out where the nearest toilet stops are can really save us a lot of time.

Hopefully we will not need any, but it would be useful to know if anyone has any workshop facilities or tools nearby in case of emergency repairs.

And finally, its all about the money - every single penny counts, and it could be that one penny that makes the difference

The more the merrier as it looks like the Express and Star will be covering the start from the Council House on the morning in Oldbury.

Hazel's right you'll have our mass support at the start and I'll be proud to tag along to Aberystwyth to hear your first talk on Victorian piers ! You are coming up through 'my' area on the final leg so it will be easy to chase you home, and hopefully the Express and Star will witness as much support at the end.

I'm hoping to run with you from Beaumaris to Halkyn.

The hotel's really easy to miss actually but look for the Burger King on the right and it's there, you've got to pass it as it's on the other side of the expressway so you need to go on a couple of miles past and double back.

Are you using CBs? If so what channel?

Not for me to say directly but Im pretty sure we have now adopted channel 23 around the country

I'm trying to publicise the event on FB on Anglesey but the scedule and order for Bangor and Beaumaris Piers are different between here and the official website.

Which one's correct???

All now changed on the website to match.

We have switched Bangor and Beaumaris - Beaumaris is third now, simply because Bangor have prganosed a cancer awareness afternoon and are having a MacMillan tea party from 2pm and some entertainers for a children's cancer charity. We are then heading there for about 4pm where we are being allowed onto teh pier for press and photoshoot plus free food from Terry at the Whiastle Stop Cafe on the pier...

George and myself dont have CB's but will be using handheald walky talkies which are far clearer to be honest. Anyone else I think its channel 23

Pier 1 - Aberystwyth

9am in Sandwell with sunny blue skies and 8 buggys – Hazel arrived moments later. Note the traffic lights set up in the back ground to herald the start of the epic journey.



At least half of Sandwell DC were in attendance and the Express and Star took tens of photos but here the focus was on the main players.



Travelling through Dudley Hazel dropped away from the tail end of the convoy and it was later suspected she had gone to B&Q however she appeared in Aberystwyth ahead of us all. An unscheduled 'relief' stop shortly before Newtown down a side street in a Welsh village had possibly allowed Hazel and Miller to sneak past.



Having parked down a street near the pier the pretty people were invited to park their buggys in front of the pier and then they were off followed by Hazel&Miller and Chad whilst Paul & Jude, Gary and Hugh headed east and home. But not before Gary and Paul had run the fish & chip shop out of fish !



A great dash through Wales to Aberystwyth in decent weather, but press delays at Sandwell and traffic congestion at Newton only underlines what a feat of endurance the whole Pier Pressure will be each and every day. However the scenery and spirit of buggy love will surely win out by miles.

Chad seems very happy at arriving at the first pier or is it because he has just had FREE doughnuts and hot chocolate to warm up!
Nice drive with everyone to Aberystwyth even though it felt like we were driving through the arctic at one point! All the best for the rest of your road trip guys.

Great summary of the day there  no idea why you thought I was going to B&Q though, you all pulled out in front of the Eddie Stobbart lorry and I couldn't make it  not to worry, I found you in Wales eventually. Apologies for the domestics I caused 

Well finally made it to Travelodge in the dark, but only because we stopped for food in Llandudno.
First 5 piers down, some great  roads, loads of sun to start. Passed the Welsh boarder into artic winds then got properly rained on going passed snowdon and Llanberis pass, before being welcomed onto Bangor Pier in the sun to applause.
Even managed to visit Colwyn bay in the dark....
Thanks to MBC for coming out in force this morning with 9 buggies in Oldbury. 7 made the trip to Aberystwyth ( sorry for loosing you Hazel for a while).  Then nice visit from Manx Dave who travelled from Bangor to Llandudno with us.
Met a few other forums members on the way without their buggies.
What a trip so far and great support from all
Loads free food and drink too
