Right , ive had enough of my buggy. I bought this back in December of last year and drove all the
way down to Norfolk to get her. To be honest ive not used it as it got parked up for the first
3 or 4 weeks and then thats when the problems started. Basically it is backfiring and ive done most
of the obvious things to try and cure it. The engine was supposedly rebuilt and is an AS code
50hp 1600 twin port. it has what looks like a new carb on it also, new shocks, new dristributor,
accuspark fitted, new plugs and leads. still backfiring when warms up . today i checked the oil
as last week, the oil level was high(golden brown oil), well today its a horrible chocolate
milkshake which would suggest head gasket on a water cooled car but what does it mean
on this?  smells of petrol, so is it fuel pump causing problems ?
Well I dont care anymore, so am selling it on at a loss, and could be a bargain for someone with
little work.
Its a LWB Limited Edition californian. its correctly registered on V5 as VW convertible and was registered
in 1984 and given a Q plate. The chassis number is present and matches the V5 and its a august 73 floorplan.
I have a heritag certificate confirming this, and spoke to DVLA about changing year to 73, as next year it will
be tax exempt. The Q plate doesnt bother me, as pointed out my other members, confirms that was inspected
by dvla back in 84 so no IVA issues etc. Its LWB anyway so no floorplan mods.
Floor plans in great condition, and in fact i would think they have both been changed as too good !!
Looks like a recently made hood with zip doors.
front and rear bull bars. matching set of Revolution alloys with good tyres, 215 15 BF goodrich on fronts and
huge Runway Enduro rear knobblys with wide letters. AS 1600 50bhp engine,
Been painted and has a few marks and spidering but preseentable from a couple of meters away !!
Scat shifter,Mot till Decemeber 13, no Tax. Bidy has been trimmed a bit front and back to make it more
streamlined.
Starts runs and stops, and back fires badly when warm, but idles beautifully,
Was up for sale at £2600, just want rid to first £1500 on her takes it away.
I have a towing frame i could sell also, for another £50 on top .
Just sick and tired of it. would be ideal for someone to chuck a cheap 1300 etc in
and flog for summer prices whilst sorting the nice 1600 in it.
Corrcectly registered, will soon be tax exempt , cheap insurance £95 with Flux.
Will try and post some pictures up asap

Well I just don't know what to say now Rob.
If you do want to try a different dizzy in it I have a few here.
Are you. Sure it's not the carb as I had similar problems until I changed the carbs on mine now it runs perfect (those solex carbs I left with you didn't work well when I tried them a while back ended up getting a different set)
If you want to. Bring it over see if I can spot anything before you make any decisions let me know.

I know, I should but the oil issue has done it for me, got all new gasket set to fit and rubbers, was
determined it wouldnt beat me with the backfiring, but thats thrown me totally .
I cant even find a modestly priced complete running engine just to get it mobile !!!

Its a shame but, my hearts not in it. I loved my first white buggy, and my beetles, but almost every one
since has proved to be a right pain in the backside!!

One more thing to try as I had a very similar thing happen with the oil level increasing and smelling of fuel.
Has it got an electric fuel pump fitted?
The. One fitted to mine was pushing fuel through at to high a pressure, forcing fuel through the carbs and into the sump increasing the oil level. I swapped it for one of those square facet type ones and have no problems since, even cured the backfiring as there was no longer excess fuel getting to the exhaust.
Either swap the pump or fit a regulator see if that makes a difference.
If you want you can borrow the one off mine to try it.

No its a standard mechanical pump ??
Really baffled me, i am wondering if water has somehow
has got in to the engine whilst it was standing, but roof is
good, and had a cover over it also  :'(

It is a shame you are giving up on it  :-[. If the diaphragm, has started to go on the fuel pump, the petrol goes straight into the engine!. A fuel pump isn't much and easy to replace. I'm sure it is worth somebody off here coming to have a look at it for you before you give up all together

I've always found that most backfires on Buggies are due to either exhaust leaks, or air leaks on the intake side; either at the manifold flanges or boots.
"Ah, Beach Buggies, sure, just a quick cheap way of getting a few more years out of a rusty Beetle. You can throw one together in a weekend." anon.

If you do decide to sell it but I think you should try and fix it first; I'll give you your £1500 for it.

it could well be that is possibly 2 different issues, but sometimes they get the better of you !!

Rob- I would happily take some money from you, but listed it on ebay this morning at a higher price.
just come back from a car show in my Escort, and it appears to have sold for £1650

Ive sent the guy an invoice , but would rather someone on her gets it .

I will keep you posted if you are interested, as the listing has cancelled now, as
they have accepted my counter offer. if you sent me a PM with your contact details
I shall let you know what happens, as I never trust ebay buyers !!
