I'm after a stage 2 clutch with a friction disk and I have two options atm

New will be about £170
Used I can get for £100

The used one is described as looks like very little use, still has machining marks but history unknown. Do I risk used? Or go new?

Do you know why it was changed?  Any chance to look at the parts before buying? Any signs of overheating?

At the very least I'd ask for a photo on a flat surface of all components to check for warping, and a good close image of the splines.

Although £70 is a fair bit of cash, and a clutch is a robust piece of kit, there's always the guarantee aspect with new parts...

if it was my choice, I'd be in the same boat (or on the same fence)!

With the mileage most buggys do unless you are really going to thrash it themes one will last for many years. Looked at I. £/year it is worth buying new unless you really know the history of the other one.

I dont know the history of it no but will get to look it over before handing over cash. Main problem is I don't really know what I'm looking at when it comes to clutches so that wouldn't provide much. I think I'm swaying towards new atm. Just depends if I can get the extra cash together!

For the sake of £70 i would definitely buy new. You have no idea of the history of the used one and it will be peace of mind if fitting a brand new one. Especially if you are not sure what you are looking at.

Go for new, if it is slightly oily or has weakened springs it is very hard to tell until it is in the buggy, then its too late and not only have you lost your money but you have to take the engine out again

Do you really need a stage II, standard clutches seem pretty robust unless you do traffic light dragging regularly

Forgot to mention it's for my beetle which is getting a subaru engine. So yeah it needs an upgrade.

As it is something buried in the build buy a new one, easily accessible stuff you can change you can try secondhand/ unknown.
