I've put a bolt on rev counter in the buggy today and followed the wiring diagram so 1 to neg on the coil, 1 to neg on the battery, 1 to dash light and the red to live. Not sure if it should go to ignition or just a switched live? I've put it to switched live via the fuse box but it records about 2200 when in reality it's probably nearer 4000 so is that live feed wrong?

Unlikely the live feed will affect it, but if you are reading only half of what you expect, make sure the rev counter is not an 8 cylinder one, or selected to 4 cylinders if it has a switch

Yes checked that straight away. Seems to be ok on idle but after that it's not much good except looks the part. Oh well another second hand bargain fit for the bin. FFS why can't people be honest, £20 wasted 

If you have a petronix igniter or alike the switching discharge on the coul may not be enough.

I'm running a 009 with points and a flame thrower coil and leads. I've put a diode in line from the coil feed to stop any needle bounce so i'll try it with live from ignition tomorrow, either that or bin it and get a new one as the wiring is in place anyway.

The ignition switched live should make no difference as it just turrns the rev counter on. Points and coil it should be fine unless unless it is off a production car  fitted with electronic ignition.
If it is after market do a web search for info.

That's a very good point.....no pun intended..........Never thought of that. I have changed it to ignition live feed and still the same really, idle is fine and up to about 1500 revs seems fine but unless i'm missing something my buggy is doing 75 at 2800rpm and although it has tall rears that doesn't affect the electrics so i think i'll bin it and get another old style one.

Mine does 70 at 2500 rpm in 4th so might just be tall tyres

Mine did 60mph at 2800 rpm with 205/70 x 15 tyres on with a. 4.125 1500 box.
Does it indicate 4400 ish if you open the accelarator up with no load for a second or two.

not sure, i had to cut play time short today as had some inconsiderate friends round for lunch, will check tomorrow.

Tested it today and under no load it'll spin round to 5500-6000 when i rev it hard and first-second pull off's it'll spin up to the same if i keep the throttle buried so maybe it is correct? Who knows, looks good even if not working properly so it'll stay
