i have a smaller one too  ..engine 

Hazel a standard lump is fine and reliable the 1835 82mm barrels take case machining to the limit and have thin skirts so can deform.
best rebuild the bottom picture as it is a twin port head so has dual relief valve oil system. the single port if 1500 or 1600 will give more torque.
I would strip them both and see what they are like wear wise and what is reusable.

No real plan, would just prefer to keep my insurance down (we can't all be insured with saga  ) and have something a bit more reliable  .

I think you're right going to try the one in the bottom picture, will see what they're like stripped down. Fingers crossed.

Good shout.  The oil filler would not allow for a dynamo or alternator to be filled........I think.

It's a type 3, the alternator is in a different position on a type t3?   

The dynamo's on the type 3's are on the otherside.. Not many alternator kits around unless you make your own. A few rough guides on how to use an RX7 alternator fit though.
