Welcome to the site

A picture of the front and rear are always quite good for aiding identification too  ;-)up

Yep.... what Dave said, but highly likely to be GP mark2 LWB

(Potentially a Californian without the pods, never seen one without though, PLUS looks like it doesn't have the rear lights vertical section - So I would rule that out)

Yep, a Mk2 GP LWB - otherwise known as a "GP SuperBuggy"
Here's a few more photos of them.

And yes you can get pods for them (though not sure who is making them these days)

Thanks Andy, this one looks like a good example, prefer the side pods on this one

May go and have a look at the yellow one at the weekend

Sorry guys but you're wrong. It's a Mk1 GP LDV or Ranchero (same body) that's lost its hard top. Check out the curved windscreen. Mk2s have flat screens.
"Ah, Beach Buggies, sure, just a quick cheap way of getting a few more years out of a rusty Beetle. You can throw one together in a weekend." anon.

On account of him being the true font of all buggy knowledge, there's a very fair chance indeed thats he's right on this one!  ;-)up

it has been trimmed by the old black n decker on the rear and on a 1978 plate I wonder if that was the donor beetle year or it got re-registered.
the A40 rear window screen was dropped in 77 as they went flat glass so 78 could well be the reg date

Spoke to owner today, said it was originally on a 66 plate when he bought it but went to get it mot'd and the chassis number related to to a 78 Bug so had to re-registered as a 78 with new log book etc, said DVLA checked it all over but still issued the log book as a Saloon (i asked him to check) would a 78 be a super bug converter to beam chassis?

They made bugs with torsion bar fronts until 79 iirc so maybe not.

Good old DVLA nice and accurate and unfathomable but they are aiming  to improve https://www.gov.uk/government/news/recruiting-talent-for-a-digital-dvla,
we have a buggy,
make, invader well it was
type, beach buggy it still is
body style, saloon well not since 1971
kind of them to re register so you pay tax.
