Hi, I've been thinking about getting the buggy metal flaked at some point, it's bright yellow at present, yellow metalflake looks gold , why is there no bright yellow metalflake ? So I will probably go red or some other colour, I think this could be done without takeing the car apart , I'm not lookin to win no shows but want a good job done, does any one here know anyone for the job and how much roughly would it cost? And would a colour change be easy to do with the dvla , I had a fantastic red flake done on one of my guitars last year  but he lives 350 miles away , thanx

Well to answer the easy question...

Changing colour with DVLA is fine. Did mine a couple of years ago. Shouldn't be an issue at all, just correct it on the v5 and send it off... No addition proof or info is needed from you to them. But remember the age old trick..... Change 1 thing at a time! ONLY

So would it just be a matter of mixing it with clear coat and laying it on the yellow buggy? Wouldn't it then be two shades of yellow as the flake is yellow from the tub.

HI weasel, I asked all these questions when I was going thru the same dilemma's, many threads on the forum ( check them out)
but in my case over a blue buggy I used gold holographic rainbow flake not too heavy and you can still see it's blue but it pop's in the right light, to keep the flake suspended in the lacquer a couple of nuts in the mixture (shaken not stirred) how much you want is trial and error, but you can always add, can't take away, a couple of top coats clear lacquer to finish, but as others will testify , its all about the prep and the final wet sanding, after its all gone off of course

metalflake will give a differant shade depending on the colour backing it up,same as candy paint if you use gold it will be deeper use silver a lighter shade,you can tint the laquer the flakes are suspended in as well

OK so I'm biased because I haven't the patience for bodywork, hate the smell of fibreglass and can't stand painting, but the way I see it there are two choices.

A) Strip the car, fix any blemishes and/or body damage, flat down, prime, flat down, paint, flat down, mix flake with clear and lay on countless coats followed by even more coats of clear laquer, flat down again and polish. Re-assemble, drive for a few months and wait/watch as scratches and cracks appear. Cost in labour, loads and materials  £££.

B) Strip the car, sell the body, buy nice new GT shell from East Coast Buggies moulded in nice bright gel-coat Metalflake, re-assemble and enjoy for years to come!!!

Cost? About the same I recon depending on how much you recon your own labour time's worth.
