Have a strange one .... strange for several reasons... for the last two years I put the buggy away and dont use it over the end of the year when the weather gets bad.  All wrapped up nice and dry.  Then Jan / Feb comes along and mind moves onto giving it a service and all that.   2 years on the trot mileometer has packed in!  WHY ?  Not moved. Nice and dry??? Old age I guess or them Gremlins!!

So it now works for one mile and then stops.  Any ideas?

I hate going under the dash.  My least favorite job and just not enough room.  But if it has to be done .... :'( :'(  may be on the look out for a replacement.

My one is the later speedo - this style http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/classic-volkswagen-super-beetle-1303-speedo-VW-T1-133-957-023-E-/200834895446?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2ec2b14e56#ht_2860wt_944

have you had the speedo to bits it may be a drive cog.
prise off the ring and  remove the glass,  then 2 screws on the back and the unit will come out so you can see the cross shaft and gears also any crap around the tumblers.

Cheers Snoopy .... that is what I was thinking of doing..... the mad thing is for the second year it goes to bed working.  Then when I wake it up a few months later its broken.

Are these things vulnerable to cold ?   Its not been damp or anything.  I havent been under the dash since last time it packed in.

Maybe just a co-incidence but I cant help thinking there is a reason for this....   So under the dash it is for me again  :'(  Might put it off for a week or two as I dont think with this weather I will be using it and MOT/ Insurance are not until April (I know its not checked in the MOT but I do want it working - if nothing else to judge my fuel as I always get around the same mileage on a tank - so good to know when that fuel gauge gets low :) )

Better say if you lubricate it use 3 in 1 or thin machine oil do not use WD40 etc as that will just gum everything up and stop it working.

Krug, did you get that sorted?  Mine's still showing the same milage after the 2 mile round trip to the MOT. ::)

Did you just give it a clean up, or get a new gear?  Any tips??

Cheers

I bought a second hand one at DubFreeze and have been too lazey to fit it.   My one started working again randomly.  Then when I went to Stoneleigh packed in again.   So I need to get it sorted as my fuel guage is so hit and miss that I tend to rely on the miles I have done rather than what is being indicated (though some of the people at Stoneleigh saw my high tec back up solution.... a green garden cain that I stick in the tank to see how much fuel I have   ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D  So cant really help until I get it out.  I will pull it to bits just to see what is going on and work out why this is happening but unlikely to happen for a couple of weeks.

Mmmm OK.  Thanks for the update anyway.  I guess if it don't need a polish it'll never get fixed  :D ;D

I've heard that they need to do over 40 MPH every now and then to keep them loose.  You may want to try that?

Your lad reckons that you had a mobility scooter go past you on the way to Stoneleigh.

If I used smileys you could have a shed load on that 1 Miss Daisy.

Hi Tony, i too bought a used speedo from Dubfreeze, just got me thinking, in order to keep the milage correct with the insurance records i had to move the numbers from the rear very carefully with a tiny flathead screwdriver...is it possible that the original owner of yours could have attempted the same thing but damaged the teeth on the cogs in the process ?

Almost certainly ..... however you dont have to keep the same mileage.  All I did last time was call the insurance - told them trhe old mileage on the original and the new mileage on the replacement and they were happy.  On the MOT it shows that the mileage has changed (in my case had gone down).  I also took a photo dated when I swapped it just so I have all the records in place.

I want a new one in (going to try on Sat) so when I put in the 1776 I can make similar records so I know what mileage I have done in it.  I am not bothered with it being at zero.... very few vehicles of this age will be accurate and as long as I know what its done .... I am happy

And on the subject of buggies...  you coming to All Types on Sunday in your buggy???
