Hi folks!

I have a few sets of alloys in 5x100 that I want to use on my beach buggy but for the life of me I cannot find anywhere that does drums in this pattern. Or blank ones to replace my 5x205 ones which are nearly in need of replacing.

I have seen Machine7 do a Rear Drum in that pattern, but they state that it is for 68 onwards.. My cars a 62... Will it matter?

I cannot however for the life of me find blank, or 5x100 drums for a '62...

I dont really want to go and get discs because I've already bought dropped spindles for drums at the front.   :(

The later drums would fit (may as well fit the later, wider shoes, backplates etc while you're at it ) but you'd need to get 14mm machined off the face where the centre nut fits as later splines are deeper.

Either that of fit later, longer axles and tubes to fit the newer drums.

Hmmm, bit more work than I was thinking.. Might see if I can just get wheel adptors made.. Or just not bother and sell the wheels... Seems the easiest way to do it!  :(

Right so I've been looking...

Can I convert the whole '62 car to disc brakes, front and rear to 4x130... then get adaptors/spacers to fit the wheels...

I've been in contact with machine 7 and they said I'd need to use dropped spindles to get their later style front discs kits to fit. Not much of a worry as I wanted the dropped look as it is...

My only other question now is.. my buggy has IRS.. so will I have the later 68+ rear end? EMPI's rear disc kit lists a few options... Pre 67 swing... 68-72 swing or IRS and 72+ swing or IRS...

Err...that's a 'swing axle' rear end, technically independant sure but not what is known in VW circles as 'IRS'.

I may be wrong but the axle shafts look like later long ones, are the rear brakes 4 or 5 bolt? A pic of the fronts of the rear brake drums would be useful.

Is there a 1/2" or so thick spacer underneath the castellated hub nut by any chance?

Ahh ok. That clears things up then.

The rear drums are 5x205 as well as the front drums.

It looks like I do have the spacer.. This is the rear drum

You've got a 68 or later swing axle rear set-up, those later style conversion drums from Machine 7 will go straight on.

If you change to new drums replace the shoes as well as they'll be 'bedded in' to the old drums. You'll probably have later 40mm wide shoes fitted but check before you buy.

Awesome! Thanks man!  ;-)up

So all I'd need to do to get the wheels on is the front discs... Sweet. Good for reference as if I find the brakes still a bit poor from changing the shoes I know what disc set up to get for the rears too...

Thanks again.  ;-)up  ;-)up

Actually...

Whats to stop me using normal 68 drums on the front and rear? Since I have a 68 rear set up I can use 68 drums in 4x130 with adaptors... Means I can use my funky wheels and if/when I come to sell whoever can use normal beetle wheels...

Is there any difference between the 62' front and 68+ drums? apart from the "better" bering lock nuts?

Or am I just looking too much into this?  :-\

4 bolt drums won't fit onto a king & linkpin spindle.
