Ive got the acewell instructions as a pdf. give me a shout if you need them. its that same as what i use.

I have a speedo in place, when you put ignition on, it goes through test cycle and thats it.
Mine passed MOT.

My speedo uses an electronic sender that I have never calibrated - need to drive a measured mile for calibration, and I have yet to get around to this, as such it never shows a value other than zero
The fact that the speedo is present and lights up when the sidelights come on is enough for the MOT, they do not drive your car anywhere or test its accuracy.
As for gauging speed - just stick with whatever speed the rest of the traffic is doing on a given stretch of road and a 'feel' for what the speed should be based on experience/engine noise/revs in a given gear/whatever for when there is no other traffic around, or as has already been mentioned use some sort of sat nav.

This is interesting, my bug get tested on the rolling road and sometime they drive it down the road, just depends on the tester I guess...

But when its taken down the road and they use a little meter on the floor to get a brake inertia reading, would they fail it due to
a speedo that doesn't work?

To be honest, I cant see the point of having a speedo fitted and it doesn't work!

...but quite a few have it in the centre of the dash and I don't think you can really see it there

Well, short of a column mount I don't mind moving my head a little bit...

It is off centre to the left though I guess, but its 100mm diameter so that helps

  um rev counter on mine is not to bad dut would be easier to see if I was dans size 

Interesting to see how your insurance company would take a view on a vehicle with no speedo as they do like to keep eye on limited mileage policies and of course vosa will love you for not recording the distance travelled as it would amount to clocking the vehicle in their eyes. ...... but I may be wrong!
