Apart from the hub nut, how easy are these to change? Any issues with one year only sizes? What else should I change while in there?

I have been hearing a clunking from left rear on lh bends, got it up on axle stands and there's noticeable play, so assume it's bearings. Will whip the drum off and get more grease in there as I need the car this week.

Any hints and tips appreciated

nothing hard Dave, big nut off, drive shaft off and remove the stub axle then bearings are easier to get out than swing axle ones. only thing to change are seals and split pin although being grease filled seals do no leak like swing axle ones.

simply bearings on the net you get a choice of quality for the same size you just need to know the size inside outside and width or the bearing number.

Limebug are nearby, will ring them when they open and see if they have them in so I can collect and get on with it

Decided to fit them when the weather gets bad as I can do it in the garage and loads to do in the garden while it's dry.

Out for a run Friday with my mate from Stoke so just put the drum back on.

Pair of bearings, seals etc £29

Only query is they are ball bearings whereas the ones on the hub now look like they could be rollers, although can't really see until it's all dismantled. What should they be?

That's unusual, will be doing both sides so at least they will be the same, although no guarantee that they match at the moment.

Just taken my stub axles out of my irs set up. I watched vw jawbreakers you tube video on the same for advice, however I think he had already taken his apart prior to filming as his stubs just fell out!
I thought I had missed a cir clip or something, but no simply drop off the cv's, loosen the castle nuts and the stub axles are free to come out. Mine were really tight. The bearings and spacers were such a good fit that I had to use an old nut to protect the threads and a brass mallet and eventually they started to move. Once the axles were out the only struggle was removing the rear oil seals ( cv) side, clearly they had been in a longtime,  no way they could be reused, easy with an oil seal removal tool!

Went for a short run to the garage and guess what, no clonking.

Not getting my hopes up yet as been here before but maybe a bit of grease and scaffold pole to tighter the nut has done the trick. Longer run tomorrow will tell me
