Inspired by Hugh's 'Not at home' pics, I finally decided to take advantage of the great recent weather and venture out in the buggy out for an initial summer shake-down run to perhaps not quite the nearest supermarket in order to replenish essential alcohol supplies (....which I believe from recent news reports can also be used as a post lock-down form of eye test). :-)Geek :-\

Anyway, the ignominious result of this jolly excursion is a broken clutch cable! ::):-[  I'm fairly happy with the process to replace this and already have a replacement cable and one of Chris Barker's cable end adjusters which will be an improvement to what was originally there.

What I am less sure about is the removal of the pedal set assembly. I assume it is relatively straight forward but is there a specific order to removing this and are there any obvious pitfalls to avoid during the removal and replacement procedure?

I can see a number threads on the cable replacement but haven't come across any particular detail regarding the pedal set removal bit.

Any good advice will be welcome.
Thanks, Stu.

Depending on year up to 4 bolts in the tunnel sides, brake cylinder rod off and 2 bolts at the accel pedal end then lie the pedals back and twist them out. Fit new cable and put pedals back in hook clutch cable on whilst lifting the pedal. Refit all bolts and pull the pedal stop plate back towards the rear. Tighten the bolts And fit cable at gear box. Then adjust pedal stops so pedal sits correctly retighten bolts and adjust clutch. It is a fiddle through the side access holes.

As Snoopy says but I also had to take the circlip off the throttle lever and slide the remaining shaft towards the right to be able to get the clutch pedal to fit back out of the tunnel.

Good luck.

Thanks for the heads-up Phillmore. ;-)up I had already found that circlip and an e-clip on the clevis pin when detaching the brake cylinder rod. Hopefully the new cable will go in today if time, fiddle and flexibility permits.

OK... getting the pedal set out yesterday evening was definitely a fiddle.

From looking at pics online I'm guessing there's a spring missing; if so can anyone confirm which type I need?

Also, the pedal set retaining plate with the 'U' shaped plastic bushing in it was fixed with two bolts with loose nyloc nuts hidden behind. This wasn't what I was expecting and assume this isn't normal? I was expecting captive nuts as on the accelerator cable side.

on cars with the pressed steel pedals you are correct captive nuts are in the tunnel on cast pedal cars there is a rubber grommet the same shape as the plate and nylon bush.
you need fingers like octopus tentacles to make the job easier.
check the cable hook for wear they have been known to wear through and snap off.

If you've not refitted them already secure the end of the cable onto the hook with a thin zip type cable tie. It'll hold it there while you're jiggling it about but just snap off when you start using the clutch.
