I'm running twin carbs and k&n filters on the buggy and getting a bit of vapour in the oil filler vent, which i have a tube on and its exits under the car to the open air.
I have a fuel pump blank as running an electric pump that has a tapped outlet on it.
Would it be a good idea to drill that out and vent it to a catch can along with the oil filer outlet or should i drill and fit fittings to the air filter tops and vent both to those or just leave it as it is?

Venting to the air filters is best, VW engines like a bit of negative pressure on the crank case, that's what they're designed for.

Thanks David, so one from the fuel pump blank to left side as you look at it and one from oil filler neck to right side? might even warm up quicker too as no chokes!

Really just one from the standard pipe on the oil filler to the right side air filter should be fine.

Don't like to disagree with David but I tried venting to twins with K&Ns and all it did was oiled up the carbs and ran like poo

If you have a VW standard filter then venting there is absolutely the way to go

I have put quite an elaborate venting system on but debatable whether it is really necessary.  Probably just as well to leave as it is

One question, what pulley are you running? The standard one has a thread that pumps air into the case, many aftermarket pulleys, if they have a thread at all, have a really shallow one that doesn't have the proper effect.

If you have been starting your engine over the winter but only for short times, this is bad. If you do not bring it up to temperature properly, you get condensation in the oil.  Could it be that you are now vaporising this water, or is the engine actually blowing oil out through the vents?

It has a standard bottom pulley on it. I was going to run the oil filler outlet to a catch can inlet port then connect the outlet to the air filter. It has twin carbs on it with k&N pod filters on it.

Not been running it at all during winter Rob. All i am getting is the odd drip of oil from the pipe i have put on the filler outlet as i didn't want oil vapour over the engine and all i wanted to do was do away with that. i was going to go outlet from filler neck to inlet of catch can, outlet of can to air filter top so it has no oil in the vapour or just leave it as it is

To be honest the engine probably just needs a damn good blast, but then again don't we all!

I find that all those breather pipes and collection box's cause more condensation and emulsion in your oil. I leave my engine vents open or with short pipes, just so the rain can not get in. just leave a catch tray on the garage floor under the buggy to keep an eye on how much it chucks out.

All i have done Rob is extended the pipe off of the filler port and put a small filter on the base so it'll still vent but not weep. All it has spat out is about 3 drops. It's the first week its been run since being apart and since last year. Now on axle stands waiting for upper ball joints so not going far for a day or two. It's probably that stud you sent me doing it 

Just needs a good run as no heat gets into the top of the engine or oil tower/stand so it is all ways! Cold  in the vent pipes etc ..venting the case is good a catch can can be used but' use a big one .. Over the last 30!! Years we lost ?? how to keep a car over winter It is now parked up cover it over and see you next year!.. Years ago it would be rockers off .top the oil up to it is over the cam! Plug the sump oil heater in .empty fuel tank.
