I have a rather annoying issue, with my new wiring in place the only problem I have is that the speedo Indicator bulb does not operate when the Indicators are operated, also the indicators don't function properly when the speedo bulb is in place, I am using the standard speedo, I have checked all of my wiring against several different wiring diagrams and all is correct, everything else on the speedo works correctly, I am using led lamps with a variable relay, which has been replaced, I have also tried a led speedo bulb, this does not light in any instance, any ideas, otherwise I will just take the easy option and remove the speedo bulb, cheers in advance

Are you using a beetle flasher can as the outside of the tell tale is positive not an earth as it is for other cars.

If your meaning the speedo where the bulb holder fits, yes it sits between the oil pressure warning light and the ignition warning light, so it appears that the bulb holder spade connector is cabled to the relay and the body of the bulb seems to be connected to another live, which I must admit is playing with my mind

Beetles use a 4 pin relay so the light gets an earth via the relay. If you look at the back of the speedo the ignition live feed to the oil and charge lights also goes to the outside of the indicator light. To fit 3 pin relays and non standard indicator switches I have cut the brass tab off and soldered an earth wire to the  bulb holder then a standard 3 pin relay can feed the Lucas terminal on the bulb holder

Beetle indicator bulb is Reverse Positive... Only works correctly with a reverse positive led bulb.. Ie the end pin is negative, not positive.   

Take care as if you fit a normal led in place.... the starter can kick in for a split second whilst turning ignition key from on position to off if indicator is switched on. (Ask me how I know this    ).

All 3 bulbs are reverse positive.... indicator, oil pressure and generator\alternator.

I have tried warm white, cool white and coloured leds and my preference is to use a coloured led that matches the gel colour so red for oil pressure and generator\ alternator & green for indicator. To see what I am refering to go to   https://www.classiccarleds.co.uk/

Look for the bulb type you want and then you have an option of negative or positive earth. For reverse positive you would select "positve" earth. (These are meant for older classic cars that are positive earth but can be used for beetles in this application).

For alternator use an additional load is required in order to "excite" the alternator into prodicing a current. You can get round this by soldering a 100 ohm resistor in parallel with the led. Or stick with the original bulb. (Generally it is accepted that an alternator needs to "see" a minimum of 4 volts in order to provide a charge to the battery ).

I had heard of this but wanted to double check before stating this... You can now get auto leds that are NOT polarity concsious..

Have no idea how this is achieved.

Well, the bulb arrived today and works a treat, thanks for the info 

good to know it works and an easy solution to a problem, never heard of reverse polarity leds before this.

I think a lot of the ones used for CANBUS control and Bulb monitoring circuits are now non-polarised (quadruple the price though)

The reverse polarity led is simply a led wired the other way in its bulb base to cater for the classic vehicles that were positve earth..

I cannot get my head arround a solid state semiconductor that has no polarity... How can this be acheived ?

How about wiring plus and minus to each leg with diodes X 4 set up to only allow the positive feed to hit that positive leg and vice versa. That should work
