Hi, engine pulls well through the lower to mid but seems to bog down or just run outta steam at top end, its a 1911cc type 4 with twin dells. Although these came from Eurocarb supposedly set up I noticed that they only have 30mm chokes/venturi fitted. These seem a bit small to me, could this be causing the lack of "head".

Sorry, that was no help, but that did make me laugh -

Farmer Rob is your man for playing with those - did wonders with mine after Eurocarb had them back 3 times

30mm Venturi's should work quite well on your engine! Are you running 36 or 40 dells? and what camshaft have you got fitted? It is usually the exhaust that strangles these engines at higher rev's, what have you got fitted?

It is funny how we all like are buggy's to start with and then later we want a bit more power later  ;D ;D ;D. If you let me know what size main jets, air corrector jets and emulsion tubes you have fitted and I will try and see if they are in the ball park!

I will grag some jetting imfo out, could you let me have your air corrector jet size as well. These are on the top end of the emulsion tubes. Rob

Hi, air corrector jets are 175.
Looking through my books it appears that 30mm venturi should work ok with 120 mains. It suggest 180 air corrector and 60 idles. This is pretty much my setup. I was wondering if going up to 32 0r 34 venturi would help.

Just to confirm that you have 36 or 40 DRLA carbs! If so you will need to change the emulsion tubes to 9164-2 these can change your mixtures at different rev's at full throttle.  You need 130 main jets, vw aircooled engines like to run on the rich side! Dellorto sell every single jet size, if you find Eurocarb on ebay, they often sell off odd size jets at half price. So have a look if they have a set between 128 and 131, you might be lucky. If you have 36 drla's, i think you can only go up to 30 ventui's. I think you can go to 34 venturi's on the 40's but as i said, 30's should be fine. If you go bigger, you lose bottom end driverbility for extra power above 5,000 rev's. Hope this helps, rob

Well I've agreed with the missus to leave my buggy (including its stock 1700 type 4) be until used it a bit and figured what it needs over what I'd like to do ;)

So planning ahead .... I've got a 4-2 exhaust set up at present and I'm sure this is sapping power ..... sounds nice enough but a decent 4-1 would boost power I'm sure?

I've got the standard twin solex carbs on it, running the shared central filter .... I'd happily lose that in favour of a pair of K&N's

Dizzy is standard - is the old 009 still the daddy as an alternative ?

Mild tweaking over full rebuild is the thought process for now, but if it's coming out for, say a clutch, then I'll lighten flywheel also.

Big question is, where do all the quality parts come from these days for the type 4 engine? Is Jim Calvert (Stateside Tuning) still about ? He built my baja's old 1911 t4 and that thing flew !!!!
