Ok I know this has been done numerous times but

I am looking to expand my fleet (son and girlfriend pushing)
Have looked at a few and always do my homework
There is even a buggy on eBay that's registered as a vw transporter
But my question one Buggy I have come across is registered as vw other but down as a saloon (has a soft top) do you guys n gals think that would open a can of worms if asked to change from saloon to convertible with dvla

:-\
Apparently I'm having a mid-life crisis....Lasted 30 years thus far.

A change to convertible can fire and inspection required letter by return unless the V5 stated buggy I would not bother as it us a big risk. The invader beach buggy V5 says saloon and it will stay that way unless forced into it.

NEVER EVER CHANGE A MODEL OR TYPE YOURSELF when submitting forms - they will take this as a date of change and rules will apply

Mine says saloon and it wont change while ive got it,
although having the hard top gives the v5 saloon more standing than over a soft top or no top

Just to be clear . . .

Having SALOON on the V5 is perfectly acceptable - it was put there at a time when there were no other options. If you have SALOON on your docs, then just get out there in the sunshine and enjoy it. If you are really unlucky, you may get pulled over for a quick chat, where all you need to do is explain where the word SALOON came from, that it is a Beetle underneath and you will find that the Feds are mostly car nuts themselves and may even want a selfie with it.

There are only two occasions when having the wrong name can cause problems, and every story I have heard falls into one of these two categories

A) You were driving like a complete Tit, you have been pulled over for a reason and they are determined to throw the book at you - and believe me, they will find anything and everything wrong with your car in order to make something stick. This is the Police doing their job and if they are able to get one more idiot off the roads, then they will do what they can. Do not blame the Police for this one as you probably brought it on yourself with the way youe were driving. We attract a lot of attention in our cars, just don`t make it "Unwanted Attention" ok?

B) You have decided for what ever reason you dont like the words on your V5 and want DVLA to update it to say Beach Buggy instead of what is currently written. This accounts for 99% of those that contact me for assistance. If your documents say "SALOON" and you ask for it to say "BUGGY" then DVLA will take it that this is a brand new build and you will be subjected to the rules and regulations of the date the changes were made. So if you request a change of model in 2018, DVLA will assume that this is a new build and ask you to undertake an inspection with a serious chance of an IVA or whatever it is at the time. If you are applying for new docs, or a change of docs, then just put down VW and leave the model blank - see what comes back.

Hope this helps   8)
