So am trying (and it seems very trying) to get v5c up to date

We have fitted a different engine, the one we rebuilt, which is a twin port 1285cc with AB code cases.

I have sent off the logbook but it was sent back without this change and with no information of why... so as far as I can work out this is probably because I didn't submit any proof, which I got from here



The problem is that I don't really want to strip it again to prove what it is, I can (I think) prove it's 1300 from photos
You can see the lip on the barrel is thicker than a 1600, and with old pistons I think that proves the bore



And when we changed the bearings, you can see the crankshaft, and it's old and not machined and stamped VW, so would prove the stroke



But is that enough proof? And who do I need to, I guess, provide an inspection report?  As the other options don't apply I think

(I took them 2 attempts to get my name right, so I have little hope of this going smoothly)

Did you not get a receipt for the new engine? I am sure if you look hard you can find it.. I guess the issue is that it lowers the tax so they are a little more interested in proof.

I sent off mine a few weeks ago - didn't have a receipt for the new engine  - but did have a V5 in my name for the car it came from so hoping that will do.

I thought they had dropped the proof of change for historic vehicles.

It's on a Q plate, registered in 1995

So though the running gear is historic, that'll be too complicated I assume

And that is what makes it a very different process to the rest of us on here   

Because you will have to follow a very different set of rules for what you are doing, I would suggest to send back the details again along with a covering letter stating a reply to the questions they have raised. Baffle them with technical numbers from the engine casing along with some photos of such and see what they say to it.

Just get a local garage to confirm on headed notepaper that the car has been fitted with a replacement engine, 1285cc, number AB###### or whatever, take a copy in case they loose it and resend the amended V5C (exact engine cc and number) with a big fluorescent Post It note stuck to it saying ENGINE DETAILS CHANGED. Keep it as simple as that, try not to confuse them too much.

I suppose you could also enclose a copy of a VW engine code list with AB = '1300' highlighted and a photo of the engine number wouldn't hurt.

Another option could be to restamp the engine with numbers matching the V5

Thats a Custodial one - its called car ringing 

If you buy a new crankcase even a genuine VW one back in the day they were blank to stamp yourself. However changing numbers by grinding and restamping is not a good idea. Most remanufacturers just rivited a plate over it with their own numbers stamped on.

Mine was rebuilt by Volkspares and they just obliterated the old number with a centre punch. As Snoopy says, VEGE etc ground the old number off and rivited their own plate over with their own number sequences. I can't see changing the number on your own engine being an issue as long as you're not trying to disguise a stolen engine or defraud the government by putting the vehicle say, into a lower tax band.

The number on an engine can be changed for whatever you like , can even be blank, the only time it gets criminal is when fraud or deception is involved, chassis vin numbers is a whole different ball game though

I sent mine off last year to change the engine number and colour came back less than two weeks later sorted no questions asked, obviously ignorance is bliss thank god.
