Hi Peter

Thanks for that interesting info! This is great, I'm really looking forward to getting all this sorted now.

Actually one of the first things I ever did just after I had the bug built was run a new earth directly from the battery to under the dash until I found the main problem.
Turns out all the freshly painted body bits was causing the problem, so yeah, I've had all sorts of bad earthing experience, so I can well appreciate it.

Cheers
Glenn

QuoteThis is the third Pertronix piece of kit I have bought over the last few months that has disappointed

May I ask what other two Pertronix components have failed recently as something doesn't sound right about all this,
and I thought I might mention the one time I had an issue with my Pertronix module.

That review Peter was on the Just Kampers website reviewing the product -Not me personally - I still run as Dr Porsche designed.

With you all the way there Hodge, thats why I use an 009 which is the modern version of this:

Bosch part number VE 4 BRS 383
(commonly referred to as the "383" distributor)
Used on 25hp Beetle and Bus engines. This distributor has a centrifugal advance only.

Hi guys

I'm still plodding through on the good weather days with this little project.
I've had the carb off and apart, and changed gaskets etc and have it running again. My next step is I'd like to do the valves etc, and as I don't really know what I'm doing when it comes to engine mechanics........is this the correct guide to follow for my 1600?

I've also bought this, https://www.justkampers.com/d186504-pertronix-vacuum-advance-standard-style-distributor-with-ignitor-built-in.html from Just Kampers, and will pop that in once the I know the valves are where they should be

Hi Glenn, my PC is rather poorly and is back at the menders, so have missed this thread. As far as I know, your carb should be run with a vacuum only dizzy. Looks like the one you have bought is a SVDA one. When you swapped dizzy's it no doubt didn't run because you fitted the HT leads in the wrong place! The leads have to be rotated 90 degrees, depending what dizzy you fit. Rob

Greetings Rob
My bug has always been running great with a 009 dizzy since I had it built in 2002.
It's only now that I've decided to change to the vacuum advance, after I've checked the valve gaps of course.

I still need to check the valves, then the last step would be swopping from the 009 to the vac advance with the electronic points

Morning Glenn, I think the dizzy you have bought is a SVDA dizzy! Which means single vacuum duel advance. Basically a 009 with an added vacuum advance can fitted, however your carb will not operate the vacuum can I'm afraid!. So it will be the same more or less as a 009 dizzy. This carb is designed for a dizzy that only works on a vacuum signal but the signal is a lot weaker and different and so is not compaterble with a SVDA dizzy. Rob

Hi morning Rob
OH NO!!
I was thinking late last night that I reckon that I've gone way over my head with this........As I've also read about different sized jets depending on whether a 009 or not.

Previously earlier on in the thread I got the impression that the SVDA dizzy is what I needed to get. So what do you recommend I do? I know what I'd like to do, is simply take my bug to someone that knows what they're doing, as I'm certainly not the person to sort this out.

I need my Solex properly tuned, right from scratch, air, fuel, jets, etc...... everything. I'm not sure then how I got the impression that going for an SVDA would be better in the long run.

The old vacuum only distributors are getting hard to find! I am not sure you can even find electronic ignition modules for them. That is way people use the 009 dizzy's but of cause you get the flat spot when pulling away unless you use plenty of rev's. The SVDA dizzy was used on the twin port engines which used a redesigned carb and with other twin carb set up's like weber 34ict's. So basically you need a 009 dizzy and put up with the flat spot. It is a shame you can not swap the electronic module over between the 009 and the SVDA dizzy but you can't. Rob

Well I have a twin port with the H30/31PICT and 009 dizzy.
And only last summer was the first time that I've had a flat spot, so I was guessing that it was something that I had done last year when I mucked around with the carb.

So I thought I'd sort it all out and put on the SVDA with electronic points. So how come I've read that the SVDA would be the one to put on with that carb and my engine which is a twin port?
I'm so confused now......  :-\

I am 99 percent sure that your carb should be used with a vacuum only dizzy so could be wrong but has a proper vw person said it will work with a SVDA dizzy? A 1600tp engine should have a 34 pict carb on it! This is a larger carb and only fits on a 1600tp manifold, the 1300tp manifold is smaller and your carb will fit on this. However you can get an adaptor which can make them interchangeable. So if there is an adaptor fitted inbetween the carb and manifold, you could fit the proper carb and run the SVDA dizzy. If you do a google check on the manifold castings numbers, it will show if they are the smaller diameter 1300tp ones. You can basically swap most things on these engines but carb and dizzy have to match. I changed my old 1300 sp engine into a 1835tp engine lol

I have been checking, which is hard on my old phone lol. I need my PC back!!! The H30/31 pict is not compaterble with an SVDA dizzy! It needs a vacuum only or a 009 dizzy. Rob

Hi again Rob

I'm still confused with this.....
I've noticed that a lot of folks use "Rob and Dave's Aircooled Volkswagen Pages", and I found this...........What's do or anyone else make of this, titled "The Single-Vacuum Dual-Advance (SVDA) Distributor?"
