For Sale

VW Beetle Gearbox – 'A' code gearbox, serial number A1340974.    According to the charts on the Samba website that serial number puts the production date as being October 1953.

It has been adapted for a 12v starter motor.

This was in my beach buggy when I bought it and occasionally jumped out of 4th gear while driving.    I assumed it was worn and as I had a freshly re-conditioned AB code (1970) gearbox ready to go I swapped them over.

When I took the old gearbox out, I found that the front mount was totally knackered so that may have also contributed to it jumping out of 4th on occasions.

Anyway, the re-con box is in the buggy and the old one is in the way so up for sale.   £175 ono.    Buyer to collect from GU21 (Woking, Surrey).

That's a much later box than a 53, they had split cases until at least 57. It looks like it could be a later box from a 12v car as I can't see any evidence of the bell housing having been ground out.

OK, I got that date from the lists on TheSamba.com.

If anyone knows the date of the gearbox from the code please let me know and I'll amend the ad.

Thanks

cast clutch cable anchor and swinging clutch bearing with 12v starter bush will be 67 to 72 as an educated guess nearer the 67 date

I'm guessing it's the original box from the donor vehicle so 1970 or thereabouts. You won't go far wrong if you advertise it as that.

thanks Manxdavid, snoopy.    I was just going by what the stamped in number said so will amend the adverts (I'd put it on eBay and VZI as well)
