Hi,

just put my buggy in for its first  MOT since I bought it and they cannot find Chassis no.
Its not in the usual place on top of the tunnel in front of the inspection plate.

I spoke to the last years MOT station and they could not remember where it was but said it took a long time to find.

Any suggestions of where to look would be most appreciated

Cheers Peter

It should be on top of the tunnel, but often obscured under 50 years of paint

Once you have found it, why not get an aftermarket chassis plate stamped up and attach it somewhere easy to find

You could get some number stamps and stamp it on to match the V5

Just an idea first beetles used to have a plate just in front of the gear stick check there too if it an early early beetle  ;-)(-;
Apparently I'm having a mid-life crisis....Lasted 30 years thus far.

I'm sure on early chassis the number was not stamped. It was only on the riveted on metal plate. Might be wrong but also  if of a certain age kit cars do not require a chassis no.
If you can't fix it with a hammer it's not broken!!!

Chassis numbers aren't required on vehicle first registered before 1st August 1980 for MOT test.

...or on kit or amateur built vehicles built before 1st Sept 2001 (MOT manual page 6.3).

your issue got me thinking so I am printing up a build plate for the powerbug, also done a generic version, luckily I have the kit to print onto ally so this will be a credit size aluminium plate

I can't find mine on the Fug either. Anyone have any suggestions for a source for making up plates, I asked in our local Timpsons and they wanted £18 which I thought was a bit excessive. I could buy a punch set but I don't want another once every 5 years tool cluttering up the garage!

Got some stamps here could make a plate that you could weld on, cannot remember what size they are but thinking they are small but as long as they are legible it does not matter.

Stamping of vin numbers....  3mm is the current legal minimum height.  Just don`t smash your thumb whilst you are at it.

I got some vehicle id plates on eBay,they look the part. Just need stamping in the blank spaces and riveting on.
The more you know, the more you know you don't know
