Had this problem since I put the buggy together last year and thought it was due to new ball joints being sticky. Anyway took the buggy out yesterday and it feels like the front is bumping over the road and it shakes the column which obviously makes the steering wheel bounce about in my hands. I've fitted everything new last year, box, joints the lot so checked notchy ball joints by taking them out and turning the steering and they feel fine. Shocks are new standard beetle ones, beam is slightly lowered but not excessive and alignment is pretty much as it should be.
The next thing is was going to do is fit castor shims and or take out a couple of leaves in the beam. I don't think it feels like a castor camber issue just feels like the front suspension is way too hard and the front is just bumping over the bumps and the suspension is pretty much staying as is and not compressing to take the rough out. Tyre pressure is 12 psi in the fronts. I have read through how to do the shims so easy enough but never done the leaves, is there any links on here on how to do them or is there anyone near Norwich that wouldn't mind driving mine and tell me what they think??

Can you push down on the bonnet and compress the suspension?

So not solid on ball joint beams you can remove the bottom are and pull out rhe 6 small bars, whilst the bottom is off you. An also do the top arm without disturbing the camber angle.

Try caster shims,, I fitted them to mine, no more understeer,,, softer better ride and stop a lot better instead of front just locking up. Can drive feeling a lot safer now. If fitting one set use your normal bolts, but if fitting two sets you will need the longer bolts.
Growing old is compulsory,,,, Growing up is not!
