Hi
I have today travelled with my good friend Bert to Bath to collect my new buggy, a 1961 Beaujangle Can Am.
The vendor David who has previously owned one of the first GP's seen in the UK back in the late 60's, has owned this vehicle since the early 80's. Due to a new direction in his life, David made the difficult decision to sell this very rare vehicle.
I would like to thank you David for your kind hospitality and I am looking forward to starting the restoration.
Now, wheres those spanners......
You just about got time to build it before IBW now get cracking :D
Sounds great I look forward to the build tread and lots of photos ;-)up
Congratulations on the imminent birth of your new buggy. Hope the labour pains aren't as extreme as some on this forum.
You just wasn't satisfied with borrowing Jason's was you mate :D :D :D :D
Never mind the spanners. First thing needed is the camera ;)
I've never wired up a Beaujangle before ;D
Looking forward to seeing it.
You'll be needing one of these then!

Yes very tidy. The shots make it look like a new pet exploring the new surroundings and I don't think I've even seen a buggy with so little chrome or shiney bits - could be the start of a new trend ?!

A wire brush, WD40, air in the front tyre and some shiney mirrors and should be good to look at.....

Looks like that has been stood for many years, as Hugh says you may need an industrial size tin of WD40. Great team effort on lifting the shell ;-)up

Chocolate hobnobs Hugh. Only the best for the Team!
As Peter Kay says "They're like the bloody S.A.S. of the biscuit world. When you dip a Hobnob, they go, 'Again, again!'"
Useful tip. Afraid I would have innocently offered Rich Tea (they absorb well) and then found myself barred from the forum.

When I picked the car up, the gearstick had a 90 degree kink in it as the gear stick / gearbox linkage was directly under the dash.
This has now been moved back 6 inches....... and yes, before anyone says it, I will need a shortened handbrake lever!

Yes, the framehead has been shortened, but whoever did it butchered it with a hammer to be able to fit the brake master cylinder! :-\ next job on the list! ;-)up

She is going to have the 1800cc type 4 engine that I bought off Jazzy in April last year and which made a summer appearance in Jayson's GP.

Could come and sus the job when we come down to Swanage ;D
With four weeks to the Restoration Show at the NEC, things are coming together well, and dare I say, on time!
Last night fitted the handbrake, the shortened gearbox linkage shaft, gearstick, and routed the brake pipes. The brake master cylinder needs slight modding. Due to the shortened beam head and wanting a dual circuit master cylinder, it was the case of going for the shortage which is off a 1303. The reasoning for the modding is that the left-hand version of the master cylinder was about £47 whereas a right-hand drive version is £175! No wonder GFS has 10x RHS ones on the shelf!
Things still to do, make the bracketry for left-hand drive Ford Escort steering rack, fit rack, collect wheels from Dave Kingfisher, collect engine from Farmer Rob and fit, bolt body to chassis and add some finishing bits. ;-)up

With under two weeks till the resto show at the NEC, the Can Am is coming together well.
As the Type 4 engine sticks out the back so much, there is no chance of fitting the rear valance!
Things to do, connect the steering column to the Ford Escort Rack, clean and polish bodywork and if time is available, fit some lights. ;-)up

New wheels, headlamps, rear lights fitted, and first polish completed.

Fit modified 1303 steering coupling, fit number plates and final wash and polish.

Well I have not updated this thread for a while so with the NEC Restoration Show at the end of march, early April being a distant memory (where does the weeks go?), I thought I would upload some pics from the show.
So to briefly get you up to speed to where I am currently, the body is off the chassis again for easier access and I am looking to do the braking system next. I will keep you all posted........

Hiya.
I have not yet got the Can Am on the road but in theory it's one and a half turns lock to lock.
There are other members on here such as Vanessa and Allan who are running buggies with the flipped left hand drive ford rack.
I assume that will be Chads first and last can am now he knows you need the body off to get at the wiring.

Lawson when you told what you were doing I was a little wondering how the silver and how you are trying to make it look aircraft ,I have to admit I like the way it looks and is turning out.Good job .Your getting ready pics looks my looks now on the side pods body panels. Thanks again for posting pics for me.I did like the red but your new vision is very interesting and out of the box but I like it.Cannot wait to see each other's cousins to a finish and on the road.Like you said on wiring it is not my thing but it needs to redone,my looks like it came with the kit but they did not include a fuse block so that is why I am redoing mine ,I Do Not want to see how fiberglass buggy burn.Better safe than sorry.Larry
Hi Larry
I rattle can sprayed it in metallic chrome paint an loved the finish, but unfortunately, when you touched it the chrome came off on your fingers.
This meant I had to then lacquer the body, which I know now, turns the paint greyish with no depth. I then used wet n dry 800 grit to get the weathered effect then re lacquered. Total cost to do it was £75 (approx US $100) ;-)up
As you know, red cars do not like sunshine and fade quickly compared to other colours, but it would be nice to still see a red Humbug out there in California ;-)up
Yes I was thinking about changing color but adding black or other color to the section in between the front fenders.I think I will end up with the red unless I see some better that catches my eye but RED sure looked good and crowd catcher. Thanks still trying to figure carb problem I think.Putting off ripping out old wiring but they never put in fuses so have to fix old wiring but will rip it out and put in new harness I have with fuse block, not a electrical person. Thanks again.Larry

Yes Lawson a car like yours needs to be seen.
It's a highlight image in the 2021 buggy calendar.
I do like your car so much it's cool on another level but I don't know why 8)

type 4 cannons a rarity and room to get at the valves and carbs.
Hi Lawson.... Nice to see these two cannons were of use.. Far better on your buggy than languishing unused in my shed and thank you again for taking them off my hands. All the very best for the festive season... ;-)up ;-)up ;-)up
