Post by: AndyRobinson on January 25, 2014, 01:50:17 PM
Swanage Weekend 2014 - In Dorset ("Yes, its brilliant - highly recommended!" )

It never rains at Swanage!!! ;)

Details to follow care of Flags a little closer to the date
But typically we drive down on the Friday, camping at the local football club for the weekend, Cruise out on Saturday, Bbq at Club house, Fireworks on the Saturday, breakfast on Sunday morning and the Parade on Sunday. (camping available to Monday Morning if required.)

Here's a taster of last years Parade:

I recently made a lot of changes to various areas in my site trying to improve how it works, Swanage being one...

Hopefully it may make things more interesting, check out some of it here  :)

Some great memories there Peter.
Really nice job.

I don't think there are many of us that have attended all the Swanage events, one of my favourites.

From Flags:

For those that have never been this is a must do event on the Buggy calendar. That's not my outlook but just about everyone that comes back for it every year.
The weekend starts on the Fri 25th at lunch time, camping is booked at the usual place, Swanage & Herston Football ground which is at Days Park, Swanage, Dorset, BH19 1NN. It finishes on Mon 28th at lunch time for those that can afford to make a long weekend out of it.
The Carnival Parade is on Sun 27th at 3pm and as usual we are leading, the theme is best of British so after the success of the mad Knights at IBW I think that would go down a storm but am always open to suggestions, The Welsh could always do dragons to give us something to chase?
We have fireworks on the Sat evening but no Red Arrows, as a replacement they have booked these guys:
The Aerostars Aerobatic Display Team
"We are thrilled to announce that our Headline Event at Carnival 2014, will be The Aerostars Aerobatic Display Team, it is Europe's largest and most spectacular civilian formation aerobatic display team.
With a unique brand of tightly-choreographed aerobatics, thunderous radial sounds and magnificent smoke effects, they are a not to be missed event.
Saturday 26th July, at 5:00pm"
I shall be adding more info as we get closer but to kick things off here's the list that matters.
Any questions to flags @ screaming.net (with no spaces).
See you soon.

As Flags has already said, due to the popularity of the Mad Knights at the IBW, we should maybe go for this again at Swanage.

@Chad - Those costumes you arranged for us were not only superb value, but incredibly easy to put on and wear - any chance you could arrange another batch for those who are without?

Hi Flags and all,

The countdown is now on... so looking forward to this years one.. Have just noticed they have tweaked the procession a little this year, turning up away from the beach before the usual pedestrian zone and passing by the procession later on.

"This year's theme is Celebrate BritainSwanage Carnival Procession
All Change for 2014!
The amazing Carnival Procession will wind its way along the sea front to the Clock Tower then swing right into Victoria Avenue to avoid the ongoing work in Shore Road.
A map showing the new route is in the programme!"

For the Newbies that have recently joined us, its very important to point out that this event is open to everybody, so please don`t wait to be asked, you are more than welcome to come down and camp with us, and join in with the fun. If you have read my introduction as to how I got started on here, then this is the event that did it and without doubt, one of the best events on the Buggy calendar

;-)up ;-)up

PS - have we a link to purchase the Knights costumes, for those planning to dress up ?

Yep, Knights costumes for the parade but they are not a must but we do need lots of Union/George cross flags etc.

I have finally got details from the Football club today and all is the same as normal.

You are all welcome to arrive from lunch on Fri but if you are slightly early please wait until I have taken over the facilities before pitching.

The cost is the same as last year, £6 per adult for Fri & Sat and £2.50 for under 16's, anyone that can take the Mon off and stay for the Sun night gets a free one.

Fri evening will be a meet, greet, drink beer and send the wife for fish and chips.

Sat will start with the cruise at 1100,
Cruise Route.
From the football club to the chain ferry at  Studland BH19 3BA
From Sandbanks side  BH13 7QN to Pitwines car park (Sainsburys) Poole BH15 1XU
Stop for an hour for shopping and to grab a picnic
From Sainsburys to Tyneham Village via Povington hill car park BH20 5DE, Tyneham has no postcode but both locations are clearly shown on this map http://www.southwestcoastpath.com/walksdb/printable-walk/77/
Tyneham info is here http://tynehamopc.org.uk/visitors.html
After a look round the village the beach is only a short walk but there are no refreshments at Tyneham so grab something in Poole.
From Tyneham back to Swanage, passing through Corfe Castle.
1700 Back to watch the Aerostars (time TBC) http://www.aerostars.co.uk/
Sat Evening a help yourself BBQ then for those that want to it's down to sandpit field for more beer and to watch the fireworks.
Sun Breakfast in the clubhouse if we have enough interest?
Sun 1415 form up ready to move to the procession start.

Dogs are welcome but no fouling on the pitch (get it?), there is a game on Sat so please leave no valuables on site whilst we are out and due to FA rules all alcohol including empty's must be out of sight before we depart on the cruise.

See you all there, any questions please ask.

Maybe, just maybe I heard that George may be making his first outing this year. He has given up with the Hokey Cokey engine (in out in out get it?) and has put his old, worn but working engine in to get MOT on Friday.

Fingers crossed as he has already missed Stoneleigh, IBW and NEWS due to a long list of issues with his engine build and poor quality, supposedly good quality,  'new' parts.

I haven't even unpacked the trailer tent since last weekend in hope of making an early start next week. Can't wait.

Im still waiting on confirmation on my passenger BUT if they can't do it then your friend is welcome with me. But absolutely! Send them down, if I can't, am sure there plenty of other spare places going!

Can't wait.

Snowy and I are thinking of doing this event, any ideas if we can hire a trailer tent...??

HI Jazzy,

Welcome back to the UK. Not sure if you can hire trailer tents but there are loads of B and B's within walking distance of the camp area, although whether they still have any vacancies?

It is a great event and worth doing if you have never been before.

I have a decent large tent you are more than welcome to borrow.

I will have no room in the buggy to carry it down so will need to get it to you before. (Easily done) I'm in the buggy on my own (with a smaller tent this year) ;-)up

Hi Guys,
Janet, Myself and Ratitude will be coming again this year,
Will b arriving Friday night but we are booked into a B &B instead of camping this year but it is only 500yards from the camp site.
Flags are you OK with us leaving the buggy and trailer at the campsite as parking space is limited.

Thanks Chad.
We missed some of the fun at stoneleigh because we took the B&B option, as lovely as it is.
Have found a place that hires trailer tents, but have to go to Dunstable to collect it....
Looking at putting hitch on buggy or maybe bring range rover to pull the trailer tent instead.

Do we need to reserve a pitch....??

Thanks Andy, really appreciate the offer. I am a fussy tart and do not like sleeping on the ground, I can't help it..... So we thought of a bit of glaring with a trailer tent or even a type 2 plus the buggy to run around in, whilst down there.....

Good Afternoon All,
New to the forum but met a few of you at Stoneleigh on the Sunday and we happen to be free the weekend of the 25th so thinking I'll drag the buggy down with the camper and join you all.
Do I need to pre book and pre pay for the camping? 2 of us, T4 and FF Buggy?
Thanks,
Mark

Pre-booking is not quite as formal as that at Swanage, as long as Flags has a rough indication of numbers on here, and we make sure to squeeze in together "refugee camp stylee" then we always make sure that we all get in together.

Its a brilliant event this one, and well worth coming down for   ;-)up

Dont panic fancy dress is optional!

(To be honest I haven't dressed up the 2x times I've been) Its nice and good fun to do but Im sure Flags will agree there is no pressure at all to get dressed up.

Though I'm guessing (following the IBW write up) with the drill sergeant in him, may well disagree  ;D ;D ;D

The more the merrier Chad.
I've put in 18 hours this weekend on Raspberry, new gearbox is in,  leaking pushrod tubes changed, spring plates powder coated and re-indexed to raise the rear, new rear tyres, brake pipes re-routed, handbrake cables greased and supports made, 1 pulled head stud done, and lots of bolting things back together.

Only the engine to go back in, brakes to bleed and finish polishing the exhaust before Friday.

Sounds like a 'small' job there flags  ;)

Been doing a bit of work on Paddy's buggy too after the thread to the oil pressure sender stayed in place when he turned it out to do the leak. No wonder it was leaking, the thread has sheared off the body where someone had over tightened it in the past :(

Dan called me Wednesday to say fancy a quick buggy trip to Milton Keynes Xscape. Turns out a guy from the Manx club had contacted Dan about buggy meets in the UK as he has a high rise Manxter in the states and is working in the UK for a few months.

So off trundle 5 MBC buggies and Fran on Friday for a quick trip to Milton Keynes to meet Gary. In fact Ruth, me and Alex went down earlier and got an hours skiing in at the snow slope ;-)up before meeting up.

Turns out Gary is vehicle stunt co-ordinator, stunt driver, rig designer on the new Missioin Impossible 5 movie working out of Watford. He has worked on just about every major film you could name (Fast and furious, total recall, etc etc). He is a total petrol head with his own family race team back in California, has a full gasser drag car and an off road Manxter with V6 corvette in it. What a brilliant interesting bloke.

He is hoping to get off early Saturday and come down for the night and stay for the carnival on Sunday. He is calling me mid week to confirm.

Chad

Quote from: Chad on July 20, 2014, 10:58:37 PMTurns out Gary is vehicle stunt co-ordinator, stunt driver, rig designer on the new Missioin Impossible 5 movie working out of Watford.

Chad

I'm looking at heading down on Saturday and am not that far from Milton Keynes.

If I get my beam back on properly, seat harnesses fitted, find a wheel bolt from somewhere AND the weather looks good I will hopefully pop down for the day.

I guess Saturday is the day to aim for?

Saturday is the full day for our own little cruise (see Flags post earlier), fireworks etc.
But Sunday is the day of the carnival parade itself and thats the main event.

Why not come down for the Saturday and camp over till the Sunday?

Saturday is a good day to aim for,

however, don`t forget that this event is about Swanage Carnival, and its the Sunday that both Flags and the town of Swanage are counting on our support for the procession, which is of course the main event

Snowy and I are up for meeting on M3, fleet services maybe.
We will have buggy, range rover which will pull our trailer tent we have bought.
Will good to be down there in good time, as it will be the first time we will have put the whole trailer tent up. Could be funny.

The countdown begins.
Just a quick up date and some details for those that are incoming.
The boring bits first:

Please park all daily drivers in the football club car park once you have unloaded as space is always tight (as Peters daily is a buggy he is the only exception).

No motorhomes or caravans (trailer tents and camper vans are ok) on the camping area they must also have to go in the car park.
Everything we dump in the car park must be moved before we leave for the cruise on Sat due to the game, cars can be moved into the camping area once the buggies have made room but everything else has to go down into the public car park.

Tents are the top of the food chain and as such get priority on the flat grassed areas, campervans can always park on the car park but tents can't.

Please keep your awnings and gazebos to a minimum and don't be offended if you are asked to move something to squeeze somebody in, we have a couple of buggies not arriving until Sat.

All buggies are to be parked on the sloped area as it's no use for camping and that way they will not get blocked in.

Please fill up with fuel either on the way in or early on Sat as stopping on the cruise for fuel is very difficult.

There is a private party in the clubhouse on Sat but they have agreed to let us use the bar.

That's all the crap out of the way so.......
Here's a bit of other stuff:

It never rains at Swanage but if it does for Sat we have a couple of options, either stay in Poole for shopping and to see the town or head out to the Tank museum or monkey world?

Someone asked what the 'Facilities' are like?  I spent 29 years living off tanks so I've seen worse but they may be a shock if you're a bit posh.

Please look at where the cruise is headed so you have a rough idea of which direction to head if we get split up (over 20 buggies heading out of Poole on a Sat, we will).

The Knights/maidens kit for the procession is not compulsory; it's more about the fun than the fancy dress.
The main crux of the weekend is the procession so please, please try to stay long enough to do it, I realise that some have a little further to travel than me and if you need to you can head straight out of town after we have finished.

See you all at the weekend, bring a hat, beer and sun cream.

Big thanks to everyone making it so good and a big thank you to Emma's Sophie who did a great job with the camera too. Plus 10 out of 10 for our surprise guest arriving mins before the parade!!!

I have loads and loads of footage, it's going to take a while to get it all processed/edited etc. but will try to do a teaser trailer as soon as possible.

Oh yes I know you are all wondering, there and back and a few miles in between, it ran as smooth as my shiny head!

Well it was all happening in Swanage last night. First off we saw a lady in her 60s or 70s being stopped for drink driving, bundled into a riot van and then her Fiat Punto wrapped in crime scene tape! Seemed like she was trying the 'do you not know who I am' defence. :) :) :) Then after that listened to a live band in the park playing U2, queen and guns n roses covers.  ;-)up ;-)up ;-)up Off now for a quick mooch before heading north.

Thanks all for the ace recovery service and all the bump starts and of course to Ollie for some brilliant emergency welding.

Great job or organising Flags. Already in the diary for next year. Photos to follow later.  :D :D :D

Previous weekends at Swanage have always been brilliant but to finally have done it in my own buggy makes this one simply the best ever! Folks if you have never done it before, trust me the buzz you get as you drive through the crowds is unbelievable - better than any drug could possibly be. If you don't have a buggy on the road, still come, there's always a spare seat somewhere.

Naturally a big thanks to Flags of course and also to everyone there. Special mention for Crazy Dave Dream for coming all the way down with his lovely daughter just for the parade with minutes to spare.

But I think an extra special mention of thanks (and I know the folks concerned will do the same) goes to Ollie (who is rarely on here). We had 2x broken buggies on Saturday evening which under normal circumstances would have ruled them out but oh no, Ollie got them fixed (with some assistance) so that both were there for the parade and running just fine!  :)

Thanks to all you Girls and Guys for support the Carnival event again and a big hello to all the Swanage virgins.

We raised bang on £700 for the Football club from the camping fees and have already been invited back by the Carnival committee, the football club has been rebooked and the chairman has said that we will get breakfast on the Sunday with no drum & base on the Saturday!

Out of the cast of thousands a special mention in no particular order has to go to Ollie for the fixes with the 2 breakdowns, Chad for leading the procession to give me a chance to see it from the rear, Crazy Dave for driving all that way just to do the parade, Patrick for the international participation and to you lot again for a cracking weekend.

Next year I'm thinking of a trip out to Monkey World and/or the Tank Museum for the cruise so those that want to see the monkeys make sure you bring your passports to get back out.

32 Buggies and a Wizard this year which I think is record for Swanage.

Well done.

from another Swanage virgin.... what a totally wicked few days.
Flags you are a legend for organising all you do, Ollie was unreal with his repair work in such a short time frame.
Every one that went, virgin or regular, was awesome. We did not get to chat to everyone, but it was brilliant to be with some many buggies across the weekend.
The cruise down was a hoot, as was the cruise back.
The cruise for the carnival was one of the best experiences I have had to date with my buggy.
We are very lucky people to have the chance to enjoy ourselves so well with so many friends.
Thank you and it will be in our calendar for next year. (We might even have a second buggy to bring to add to the numbers further)
