Welcome to my Bounty Hunter build blog.
The build is going to be part my work and I'm going to involve professional help aswel to speed things up and hopefully produce a unique world class buggy.
The chassis has been built by Mark at flatlands. It's shortened 14.5 inches, has an IRS, discs all round which have been adapted to fit Chevy pattern torque thrust d wheels. It also has drop spindles and adjustable ride height.
I have a specific overall look in mind for the buggy and how it will look when being driven. The sound is also important and it will have good performance.
The body was made by Rob at East Coast. The mould for this body was taken from a shell that had been modified possibly to make a corvair based buggy. I didn't want to use a subframe to join the shell to the chassis as it looses interior space and is difficult to cover up outside. So I have cut the mounting flange off and joined the bottom part of a Manx shell to the Bounty Hunter shell. I did this in sections and it wasn't to bad to do. It meant that I could set the shell a bit higher than standard.

Thanks Manx Rod, I have seen your build blog. The quality and detail is amazing . I like the idea of building the whole car first to get the look right and working out ideas along the way and then dismantling for detailing and finishing. Are you planning a hot rod type interior ?
Flatlands seats the seat shells body colour. The dash will be more Hotrod .
Joining the body together.
I wanted the body a little higher than standard as the windscreen is quite low and I wanted to sit low in the buggy. It took a long time and lots of measurements to finalise the height and position. I used a scrap engine to evaluate the back end. Once I was happy I sectioned the lower tub from a Manx into parts that would fit and glassed them into position. I realise that a lot of prep is still needed for the bodywork but at least I can do the first build on the car now.

You should take a mould when you've finished. Would make it so easy to put more Bounty Hunters on the road with that work already done.
I would consider doing that although I would not be able to do it myself. I have made mods to the side pods as well.

Rob would probably be a interested in doing a deal with you.
Once the body was in one piece the next job was the side pods. These are a little on the short side as standard. They stop an inch or two above the side of the chassis. This was a bigger gap for me from raising the body slightly.
I fitted the pods as best I could and then cut the bottoms of . I re attached these at chassis level using home made brackets, self tappers and a glue gun. It made them quite solid. I then masked the outside with tape and glassed the insides. When this was set I filled and shaped the outsides. They are now glassed on to the shell. I have an idea how I am going to finish the joins at the front and back of the pods so that from the side it will form a nice curved wheel arch shape.

I would ask rob. He might do you a new shell from the mould then you wouldn't need to paint it and you'd have a stronger gelcoat finish

I love the Bounty Hunter and they seem to be few and far between, the way you have decided to do away with

open up a whole new lease of life for this buggy if ever a mould was taken.

I doubt I mould would ever be made unless there was actually a list of people ready to purchase Bounty Hunters (like this)
I am surprised it hasn't already be done like this to be honest. Most people still have a fear of fibreglass...

The next part of the project is to have some stainless steel fabrication done. I will be using a company in Shipley called zorztec. They make custom exhaust systems and the work is very good quality. I have been making mock up parts to show what I am after. There is also going to be a stainless lattice type subframe on the inside of the car which will be styled kind of like a Ducati frame. The interior panels will go behind this. Also having custom canons made which will styled like Lamborghini tail pipes. I have a 1955cc stroker engine with twin webers etc. which needs fitting before it can go for the work.

Seen some Zorstec work on their website a while back. I think they were based neared the centre of Brsdford then. Certainly look like they turn out good quaility work.

Hazel is probably right, lists need to be got, but somehow there seem to be moulds out
there and they are not used much, a Bounty Hunter one may break the trend, and people
would come.

Not much to report other than the buggy is at Zorstec having the stainless fabrication work done. The first part is the internal frame which is being styled kind of like a Ducati frame. Andy at Zorstec has been working on the base for the frame which bolts to the chassis independently from the body. It has bolts welded to the underside which go through the chassis and covers up the bottom of the tub and the tub bolts. He has made this part from angle iron and a lot of work.

Thanks guys, Andy Zorstec is on holiday this week so no progress until next week now. I will post pics as the frame develops. Then it will be side bars front nudge bar, exhausts and modifications to rear bar.
That frame really is nice and its going well.

Andy at Zorstec has done some more work on the subframe. He is a really talented guy and adds his own ideas which has improved the overall design.

A bit more work has been done now. The frame is almost finished. It just needs the two bars going from the roll bar to the body at the back. The mounting plates are visible at the back of the seat in one of the pics. I'm pleased so far. Next we will remove the frame for a full weld up and polish. Then on to the exhausts, hopefully next week.

The frame is just about finished now. Just needs fully welding and polishing. I'm very pleased with the overall look and I highly recommend Andy Ainsworth at Zorstec for his skill, patience and ideas. We even managed to make the steering column adjustable using parts from a flatlands kit.

Thanks Guys. As I'm building this as a keeper everything is going to be stainless where possible and everything else is going to be electro galvanised and then powder coated or painted. No chrome, low maintainance and durability is the idea.
Just a quick update. The exhausts are now done although the pics are not great. It's difficult to take pics in the workshop due to equipments everywhere. The idea behind the exhaust is to fill out the space between the side of the engine and the inside of the wheels to give a complicated shiny wide look right across the back. I will be using billet serpentine pulleys with no covers so I wanted the back of the engine visible. All tinware will be metallic bright silver powder coat and the clippers and ancillaries will be candy blue.
The cage is finished and I'm so pleased with it. Now the bonnet is back on it is still mostly visible. We have left half an inch space between the cage and tub for the trim panels to go behind. The side bars which are really for effect are finished and Andy took great care with these to follow the shape of the pods.
We were working on the front bumper here and surprisingly I'm the one on the left.
Not too much of an update but you can see where it's heading. I'm hoping to have the buggy back home in a few days so I can clean it up and take some good shots. Then on too the next stage. I have a couple of surprises yet !

We have nearly finished the stainless fabrication work now. It has taken a long time and has seemed like an epic amount of work. I cannot thank Andy at Zorstec enough. Im normally quite focused on my own ideas but Andy came up with some great ideas which really improved on what I had in mind and the finished result is beyond my expectations.
Just a quickie to show you the front bumper. It has been designed to suit the bodywork of the bounty hunter and I'm very pleased with it.
I have two more surprises to be fabricated in stainless next week and then the buggy comes home for a while.

Really liking this build. I was within a 100 yards of Zorstec last weekend! I wish I'd stuck my head round the door, but I'm sure the wait to see the finished article in the flesh will be worth it. Keep up the good work ;-)up

Buggy is back home at last. Check out the wheelie bar, it will have skateboard wheels on each side. I'm not sure if it will wheelie. It does have a 1955 cc tuned motor but it's more important to look like it can wheelie ! Having a think about the next stages at the moment. I have some more fibreglass work to do so probably take the body back off and then Dubtricks can get to work with the chassis at the same time.

Thanks for the comments guys, I'm blown away. I will be starting the break down and re finish stage soon. I'm thinking blue metal flake like big clems ( small flake) for the body, grey to match the wheel centres for the chassis, with the beam, suspension parts and engine parts in bright silver metallic powder coat with candy blue calipers front and back. Interior in either cream or tan diamond stitched leather, fully trimmed, sides and everything. I'm going for a street cruiser look. The guy who is doing the bodywork really likes the shell so just maybe a mold will be taken when the prep is finished. I'm not sure how this would work as the side pods are glassed on now but I think it can be done in sections.

That looks very neat, tidy and rigid.

Bear, the wheels are American Racing Torq Thrust. I got them from Flatlands Engineering but I think you can get them from North Hants tyres too.

Mel you did an outstanding job with the design of the bounty hunter. I'm pleased you like what I have done with mine. Could you tell me what headlights are suitable for the light pods. They seem to be just under 9 inch and most UK lights are 8 1/2 which leaves a gap round the outside. I think maybe old ford truck lights or something similar would be better.
I've made progress with the buggy but been so busy with everything else that I've neglected the build blog. I'm Going to be busy for another month and then I will fill in all the details. In the meantime here's a few sample shots of where we are at the moment.

as said looking good, just one observation on LED rear lights fitted at an angle and that is some become invisible to the driver behind, unless you are pulling a wheelie at the time.

Great to see your progress . I love the color. Looks like your close to getting it done.
Sorry I can't help you with your headlights. Some American car with 7 inch sealed beam bulbs.
When I built the prototype we used 5 inch bulbs. from a dual light system. I have a lot of pictures of Bounty Hunters from the internet so I know the right size is out there.

Saw this buggy last night at Leeds Cruise and it is superb. Park it next to most cars and it will be this that gets the attention.
When people realise how much thought has gone into it and how things have been modified to Blondie's liking, then it would attract even more attention.
I had the pleasure of chatting with Blondie for a while, and hopefully he'll be popping back on here, or the Facebook page soon.
It is an amazing buggy with so much going on, hopefully some more info will come along soon, in the meantime...
