hi all I'm about to set about making a rollcage I have lwb rat tips tricks will be great help thanks in advance al
Big bending machine. lots of sand, a good welder and lastly a plan. ;-)up
Basics.... Two descriptions... Pipe which is measured by it`s o\d (outside diameter). Tube which is measured by it`s i\d (Inside diameter).
The Mandrels for pipe or tube differ in actual size. (Bits the pipe\tube is bent around).

Never knew that - amazing the things you pick up on here ???
Make sure that even under extreme roll over or in any other accident scenario your flailing-about head cannot come anywhere near contact with any of the structure.
If you want a decent cage with decent strength, then use CDS tubing, and use a tube bender to bend it. 1" 5/8" is a good diameter tube to use, without it looking too small or large diameter. Also make sure that your welding is to a good standard.

My hoop is 2" Stainless Pipe with welded elbows, Not intended to be a roll cage.
My engine cage is 33mm OD but i have a tube bender, and a pipe bender. Tube generally has an internal seam. Pipe does not. There are some cheap pipe benders avail but the bigger you go the more pressure is needed.
As for the tube notches i have CAd software that creates 1 to 1 wrap around templates. Fag packet sketch with some dimensions for the angles you require and i can send some on
Stainless.... Had real trouble trying to bend this stuff. It`s not a diy thing to the best of my knowledge. No matter what I tried, how careful I was, and using kiln dried sand, (easily got as "kids play sand), I got warps, stretches and wrinkles. Visited a pro` fabricator to discuss this and he told me that stainless has to be "rolled" as well as "bent". :-[ :-[
If you want stainless, then you should talk to our resident stainless king BEELZEDUB (Mike Hausmann)
My stainless cage was done by buying 90 degree bends and welding them in
you shouldn,t be far from a few people that make stock car chassis, they will happily do you the simple bends to make a buggy cage,or thiers plenty of off road nutter in your neck of the woods.
Proper roll cages are usually made from 4130 CroMo tubing or even T45 which is an incredibly tough aircraft grade. Both are a bugger to work with for the amateur, especially T45 which blunts cutting tools like nobodies business.

Mike is definitely your man..... he built mine to the exact spec and design i asked for...you wont be disappointed... :) :)

Sounds like the fella I need to have a chat with .... looking to add a front (screen)hoop and a bar to connect to main hoop to give a decent 'full cage' look but also as I want to carry Windsurf / Surf / SUP Boards up there ;)

Wrong way around, tube is measured O/D, pipe is measured I/D - cheap bottle jack pipe benders will wrinkle and crush tube and make it no more than decoration in an accident - same for stainless steel which work hardens and is brittle in the HAZ when welded without heat treating afterwards.
Tube and pipe can both have a seam or be seamless, that's not a property of either, that's a property of how it's made, welded, rolled, drawn, etc. If your roll cage has a seam down it chances are it's cheap ERW exhaust tube which is soft as s**t and has a liability to fold and split in an accident, leaving you bouncing around inside a car full of sharp steel edges.
If your wanting a proper roll hoop rather than something decorative I'm not far down the M1 and have a proper CNC tube bender and stock ROPT510 (a CDS tube specifically for cage making, more ductile and welds better than cheap CFS) and T45 tube (about twice the strength of common CDS....but 3 times the price).
Hi Phillip,
Just wondering if you are still able to make roll cages?
I don't really do many any more but I do still have the equipment for doing the odd cage/repairs.
