Hi Simon, did you take the end cover off the alternator to take the photo because I just thought, there should be a pipe on the end that is connected to the fan housing and that blows air through it to keep the alternator cool. On later ones, they put a fan on the belt end for cooling instead.

The last Camper we had with a 2.0 T4 engine did not have the pipe going to the alternator.Instead it had a shield which was part of the tin where the alternator sits. When i was searching for tins i managed to bag of box of allsorts for the T4 engine with spares. The tin which is in place has this shield attached as i removed the other one.
Hopefully the Alternator should be good. When i spoke to Dave DND he said he was running an alternator off another vehicle, so i guess i may be ok. I'll risk it 

If you mean the duct at the back from the fan housing, then its used to cool the OEM alternator.

The alternator I am using (and most modern ones) have internal fans for cooling, so the extra ducting is not necessary
