Ok so been doing a spot of wiring!
Regulator has 3 pins D+ Df and D-   Red brown green. The red I have going in and a spur to ignition red. As the wiring diagram says. But does not crank motor  :(. So I have a live from battery to ignition.

What needs to happen at regulator end to allow charging?
1800 engine with alternator.. Same D+ Df and D- pins..

Simon, first question:

Have you got a dynamo or alternator?

Pretty important as they are both wired differently and an alternator doesn't use a regulator, unless it's an early alternator with an external regulator.

What motor is it ? Do you have a type 1,2,3,or 4 in it?

At 1800cc, I'm guessing type 4...

The two wiring diagrams for 1972 should help. Pretty much confirms the Google diagram

Guessing you need Bens diagram as you have a tall rectangular early regulator that has a round 3 pin plug into the alternator.

And the alternator only has the same 3 pins..
There is no B+ terminal.

Strange the B+ is usually a post with a nut on rather than a push on terminal, you may have an alternator with a built in regulator.

Photos will help identification.

The Alternator is new, will have to dig through some receipts to obtain from where. My Beetle  alternator has 3 pin plug on it and then there is a wire with a post and nut which is B+

I will take off the Alternator later to take some pics

Simon,

Check its not on the back of the casing or somewhere....my Corvair one was a bit odd too.

As Keith said, a couple of pics of it would help

Seems I need to look s little harder  :) there is a B+ on the alternator.

Does this unit look to have in built regulator? Would it hurt to wire it up as Bens diagram?

Hi Simon, I have seen a few alternators for the type 4 engines but not like yours!. If it fit's it will no doubt work. you need an external regulator to go with it but the one's I've seen have the male pins on them so you will need to make up cables with female spade connectors on both ends to join.

The wire from your charge light connects to the D+ terminal as well as the regulator. A wire is then connected to the nut which looks like the nut which has the condenser connected to and the other end of this wire connects straight to the positive battery terminal, this should be able to carry at least 65 amps depending on the output of the alternator.

Hope this helps, Rob

Hi Rob

I wired this Saturday but clearly didn't see the B+. The regulator is also wired but as you say slight mod to charge light on dash. Was supposed to be simple job to wire it as I have a reference point with beetle. Never mind least you guys have the knowledge  ;-)up.

Cheers
