Following on from my MOT success at the weekend, advisory for front tyres nearing the legal limit... A stupid tyres question coming up..........

Currently 185/65/14 on the front end........... Now... Having done a bit of a interweb trawl it would seem that because of the lack of weight on the front of a buggy, there is a penchant for fitting softer tyres to the front end to improve handling / braking / reduce skip steer...... Anyone have any opinions about any of this? and what would you suggest?
Does the size sound about right? What would you recommend as a tyre ? 

I used to fit good quality remoulds, Colway or the like, slightly softer compound than regular tyres. Budget brands can be a bit softer/grippier too. Top Gear did a braking test years ago, rems. and budgets stopped quite a bit quicker than top name brands.

What width are your wheels?

I fitted softer (rain) tyres on the front, transformed it. Mine are 14" rims

You need a grippy tyre as they tend to be softer rubber also check the load rating the lighter the load the softer the side walls.

Tyre sites have to show grip and ratings. Guess a harder tyre also has a higher db reading for noise.

Not sure about the width of the rims Manxdavid, They are Wolfrace Slots. Ill try and have a peek later......

Yes that's what I had read Doon, softer compound rubber, low pressures in them...

Snoop, How does load rating work? I have heard of speed ratings but obviously a different kettle of worms and certainly not an issue with my buggy..

Hudge Buggy has Toyo Proxies on the front, basically a road legal track tyre, don't expect to get more than 6 K out of them, but you will stop with no problems, with no weight in the front.

I would suggest something like a good brand winter tyre? Very soft but with lots of grip with the off road styled pattern.

I've also used re-moulded tyres from Maxxsport. I used the road legal race tyre RB5's and they were fantastic, so I'd recommend there tyres. The RB5's were super slicks barely legal. There are other less slick so not as deadly in the rain

Running uniroyal rain tyres on the front,195/60/15 with 12 lb pressure sorted

The load rating is the 2 digit number before the speed rating letter at the end of the tyre info 185/70 15 66 H.

So 66 in my example the higher the number the more load they take and the stiffer they are.

My toyo proxys have done well over 6000 and have loads of tread left but they make the steering heavier, I notice a difference when I put the summer wheels on after light steering in the winter with whatever make is on there now.

I think i have Falcons on mine semi racing tyre on the front, soft and grips too  , i have Yokohama racing tyres on the rears.

No need to apologise Hudge the more comments and info the better, then off o the web to check stuff out. Just that front tyres wearing out in 6k would suggest excesive scrub from incorrect set up or too many track days as a rule.

I had proxes 4 on my old car, I wasn't too keen on them as they would lock up, and break traction on the beans a lot quicker than the dunlops it came with.

Sayin' that just bought a set of T1r's to put on the front as the avons are 16 years old !!

As far as I can see TR1s don't come in a 14" option  and most tyres are load rated 89 and upwards ?
