Hi

Need to change the standard gear leaver from the standard fit to something that is angled backwards towards the driver as with the new seats I'm having to lean forward to change gear. Been looking band their seams to be a few. Budget upto £100

As long as the rear coupling and centre bush are in good order I've always found the EMPI Hurst style one works well. Which shifter? is a bit like which oil? though, you'll get lots of opinions but no definite answer.

Have to agree with Manxdavid here - I also have the EMPI one, and really like it

I have to agree with Hudge.

I've a vintage speed black mamba. Was my only real extravagance on my build but my goodness was it worth it. Bloody lovely piece of kit, so well made and so precise as a shifter. Pretty much fit and forget as well. No messing about getting the positioning right......

I have the Empi shifter too. Been on my buggy over 20 years. Perfect and no problems setting up.
I'm in my buggy,

I've got the vintage speed classic shifter. Couldn't tell you how it works though as it's still in the box and I don't own a buggy!

Mines is from an old ford anglia.

Looks like the ball joint was welded onto the rod after it was bent into a comfortable position. Then a universal knob on top ;)

Gene Berg 11" angled shifter is a nice bit of kit but is quite expensive. Real solid shift and sits nice with the angle on it.

On earlier floor pans the gearlever was located by a peg on the ball so these did not rotate like later beetle ones, so early levers can be bent to the rear and that is how they stay.

I've got one fitted and can report that it works very well. I have had the Empi hurst-style one and it was OK, but the Vintage Speed one is better made.

I have also had a Bug-Tech shifter, which was VERY precise, but my wife found it difficult to use with the 60% reduction in throw. It looked pretty cool, though...
