Do they really make any difference?

When I was out in the buggy recently and Dad was driving, I put my hand out where the wind deflectors would go - the wind didn't catch my hand till further out. So how to they make any difference?

Viewed from above the wind hits your windscreen which isn't very streamlined so is forced violently to each side so the pressure on your hand might not be too high where you mention. The wind then tries to reform to where it was displaced from meaning it swings back into the sides of the buggy and at the back flows towards the back of the passengers heads and towards the inside of the windscreen.

Adding wings increases the effective width of the windscreen and being at an angle they slightly smooth the deflected wind such that it is less powerfully pushing into the sides and is weaker at the rear of the buggy I.e. behind the passengers heads. If you had wings you'd simply find you would be able to extend your hand even further before the wind caught it. I'm not knocking anyone who has wings but as you enjoy the at times gritty reality of driving a buggy you don't need wings. They might make you soft and start thinking you wanted a 'proper' car with a roof, doors, heating etc!!

Hi ya,
I too have thought about these, I'm interested to hear from anyone who has fitted them for a before and after comparison.

I had an MX5 for a while, and although it is still windy, it was considerably more comfortable, especially at speed.
I know its a different car and all, but I think the front quarter light makes a difference to the buffeting.

They reduce the ammount of water that gets inside the screen when it rains and even the distance we sit back from the screen they makea difference on the buffeting.

And if you can get them to flap fast enough you can even get airborne    :D ;D

Cheers for the explanation Hugh, I think that's what I need to here  ;-)up plus the testimonials from folks that actually have them. There seems to be so many different ways of doing it (shapes and brackets) - I'll probably be indecisive for another year before possibly getting any.

I am also wondering though, how much wind, if any, Jonathan's little door/wing bits helped deflect. Maybe this would only help in keeping the wind coming around and in over your legs?

Thinking along those lines Hazel, I spotted this one at Holland a few years back

I'm guessing I can't get these beautiful hinges any more?  ???

So what are the alternatives?

Nope.

Bill of B&K died and his wife just kinda shut up shop. Website gone and everything. Apparently a couple of years back she was looking at selling off any remaining stock but I lost track of what was happening and never heard any more. Would love to have got hold of the CAD program for them. I still might see if my dad can draw them up in CAD and see how much a company would want to machine some.

You would still need the clamps or work out how you would fit them ..... not sure if they are the right shape .... they do sell just the clamps

Noop.

As said B&K now gone, Bill's son did run it for a short while but I think to Bill it was more of a love of making ascetically pleasing solutions than getting rich on limited sales.

I could tell you that I only paid £80 for mine off BillyBob a long time ago but that would be rubbing it in.

Mr Flanagan, you are one jammy devil if that's all you paid.......

I think they made sunvisors too. They were on their website although I never saw a pair anywhere.....would have loved some of those too....
