Sorry not gone old skool but in Seychelles , VW parts are hard to get.

I am also running big boots at the back - 10 inch  and of course disc's all round..

Sorry but I cannot help you with your build from a Scooby point of view, and you'd find much better qualified than I to help you with anything VW, but welcome to the forum.   Please keep us posted with your build.
If you post a photo of your tub, then there is a good chance someone on here (Manxdavid) will be able to ID it, whether it be SA, UK, USA, Aussie, whatever. 
Oh, one last thing, if you can pay the flight and accomodation I think we'll be able to get a 'build party' together to fly out and give you a have for a week or two!

The 1600 is a raely used engine but any alternative motor has a lot of minor tweaks to get everything working including the cooling system and exhaust as they are not off the shelf items.
