Hi guys - i need some advice
If i fit a type 4 into the buggy do i have to support the engine on its support bar?
Or if i fit a solid gearbox mount kit and poly bushes will it be sufficient to hold it?

Thanks in advance -

I got a type 4 in mine...

Using a rhino mount for the last 8 years till I just broke it a few weeks ago :D
so fitting another one in a few weeks time and going to try a single gearbox strap by the nose cone to see
if that helps prevent it breaking again from hard launches ;D ;D
I did use standard ones but when they break you cant change gear :o
I'm in my buggy,

Hi, good to see someone else is going for a type 4 engine. I've had one in mine for 2 years, with no problems, without any extra support!. At the moment I am rebuilding, more or less a 2.0L Porsche engine with 96mm B+P to put in my buggy. So my 2.0L type 4 engine is up for sale, all complete with twin 34 Weber 34ICT's, ready to bolt straight in but without the exhaust system; if you are after an engine.

I've got a type IV engine to fit in my buggy when i finish rebuilding it.

I asked the same question on the old site not long ago and the general consensus was use a good set of mounts and maybe a strap set.

You could use a kafer brace and you could build a rear mount tied in to the top shock mounts but most guys thought it was not needed it just added more weight.

I have decided to fit a set of rhino mount and a strap set and i will see how i get on with that.

Forgive my ignorance what are the advantages of a type 4 over say my 1776 type 1?

None really.
the advantage could be seen as yours as there are more parts made for your engine cheaper than the parts made for a type4

the type 4 is a later improved design with crossflow heads and a stronger bottom end with a proper oil filter from new. the 1700 injection was 80 or 90 bhp as standard gives an extra 1000rpm and was cheaper and more reliable than tuning a type 1 for that output.

I was going to build a type 1 engine - lots and lots of options but then a turn key 1700 turned up for £350 and as Snoop said its a lot of bhp for the money
I also like its lower profile which means i can fill the hole where the t1 tinwear came through.

But how do you make a t4 pretty - there are no chrome bling parts.......hmmm i will think of something ;)

I have read that i should machine the flywheel and add a bearing to support the input shaft.

Has everyone done this? Any other tips?

You will also need an electric fuel pump because the mechanical one fouls on the gearbox mounting. You have to put a support bearing in the flywheel because the beetle gearbox shaft is a bit shorter and will not reach the needle roller bearing in the type 4 crankshaft. If you have got a 1700 engine, hopefully it will have a 210 or 215mm clutch fitted; as this is what you need to go into the beetle gearbox. The larger type 4 flywheels and clutches will not fit.

Think Rob covered every thing there.
As for making it pretty you have a load of RAL colours to chose from
not all that shines is good..... :-)Geek
