GP Mk1 Beach Buggy

Was on V5 as VW Saloon so I attempted to get DVLA to correct it, now suggested IVA so lost all heart and mojo.....

Not sure what price to put on it to be honest but has to be worth £2500?

get it IVA,d then , shouldn,t be that difficult and you should retain same number.

That is a bummer but at the present stage of build as said you could change tack and go for an iva specification build that would add some value to the buggy.

It is a shame that asking a question about trying to do things correctly can back fire but the rules are quite clear and buggy builders are not the only sufferers.

unless you can prove it was built pre SVA like an old mot form from the 80's stating beach buggy as I guess it should have been re -registered when built in 69 going by the number plate.

I am going to challenge it. Even the inspector at Brighton agreed with me that it shouldn't need an IVA as it was built pre those rules.

The team I spoke to in Swansea were on my side and could see where I was coming from. They suggested appealing.

There is even an ombudsman if I have the energy to pursue it that far.

Well I have a build/restoration thread on another forum and have pictures with metadata and time stamps showing the vehicle pre IVA rules.

I definitely think it is worth a fight.

This isn't a buggy that is produced these days. It is a GP Mk1, its a historic vehicle. Piece of history. By going down the IVA route you basically loose that history and say here is a car i've built now can I register it. Thing is this was registered and on the road for years so why should it need an IVA now, just because I wanted the right description on the V5.

Why not start a second thread in the Buggy Box section where it will get more awareness, setting out your proposed IVA challenge, and also ask if anyone has got any old pictures that may help support your claim.

That way we can leave it down here for sale as well

I've already tried to get some history and earlier pics. Also getting in touch with previous owner and getting statements from people.

As far as I am aware they cannot apply legislation retrospectively. The beach buggy was constructed way before SVA and IVA even came into play. The car was registered and on the road MOT'd and taxed in the past as a buggy.

A restoration does not class as a build in my eyes especially as chassis and running gear etc all remain as it was originally built.

Anyway rant over for now. 

Hi Paul,I had issues with dvla over my buggy.a friend told me to send a fiver to them and they will send you a copy of every registration document issued for that vehicle from first registration.they might come up with rego they states when converted to a buggy.it worked for me.good luck mate.roy

If you can PM me more details i'd appreciate it. Is yours the same make/model ie GP mk1. You managed to retain your plate? That should work as a precedent.

If it's just down as a VW saloon and not a Beetle just build it with a (removeable) hardtop so it IS a saloon...simples...
