You can but they tend to be inaccurate due to the length of pipe required. TBH they weren't very good for anything except if you wanted to see a needle madly spinning round.

they tell you how much suck your engine has, vacum operated wipers were also a good indicator of that and they became extinct so enough said.
extra gauges that are useful are engine temp, rev counter, voltmeter/ammeter.

You don't really need ammeter and volts, amps for dynamo and voltmeter for alternator IMHO, mind you you do't really NEED any of them... :-\

Mmmm. well, you should have at least an oil temperature and pressure gauge....

The oil pressure warning light on a VW type1 engine uses a sender that only lets you know
when the pressure is below 6lb's/sq inch..... ???

Which is really a little low, specially when you might be cruising a motorway at 70!

I know you are very keen on invisible gauges but you really should have these two  ;-)up

she could just mount some lights on a steering wheel boss or in the spokes if wanting a clean dash.

Yes it is, and I had one for the MOT, now it's stupidly hidden away behind my dash.  ;D
